El Rey is one of the most important archaeological zones on the island of Cancun. Although it originated as a small settlement in early times, it reached its most important growth stage until the late Postclassic (1200 - 1550 AD). According to investigations, it is believed that El Rey and nearby San Miguelito formed the nuclear area of ​​a town dedicated to maritime trade and fishing activities.
