Guidebook for Notre-Dame-de-Monts

Food Scene
Exists only from May to September - as it's a temporary building right on the main beach. Food is simple but surprisingly good for such a prime location with stunning views. Families are welcome, kids can come barefoot inside, and service - orchestrated by Julien the friendly owner - is always good. In peak season, remember to book.

Notre-Dame-de-Monts is unfortunately not the place for serious foodies - but for a good enough meal with friendly service, head to Le Bateau, it's the best the village can offer. The menu is simple and reasonably priced, the pizzas are good (take-away is possible) - the restaurant is super clean and the service always impeccable. It's also open most of the year. We are regular customers - this is where we go when we don't feel like cooking!

Open year-round, this crêperie is the best in the area. It does not just regular old traditional galettes, but also high cuisine ones: spectacular creations that you never suspected could be done with crepes! Wash it down with the best organic cider, it's a treat - and not too expensive. Amazing service, contemporary decor. This is the place we take our visiting friends to. Remember to book, even off season, it's always full.

Superb traditional restaurant in Noirmoutier. One tiny room, few tables, exquisite menu. Intimate and very French. Open year round, but bookings necessary, it's always full.

If you're looking for a nice terrace (although small) in the heart of Noirmoutier-en-l'île and a fantastic menu, look no more! Very friendly service too.

Arts & Culture
You can't come all the way to Vendee and not spend a day (better: 2 days) at the spectacular historical theme park called Puy du Fou, voted World's Best Theme Park - with good reason. It needs to be booked VERY early and it's expensive and you won't see it all in a day - and expect to meet vast crowds in season - but somehow it's all worth it and truly mind-blowing. Try to get to the "Cinescenie", the nighttime grand spectacle the park is famous for. Our family's favourite in the park: the Vikings and the Birds show. Open in season and Christmas time. Check it online!

Logis de la Chabotterie is first a beautiful house and garden in Vendée, with a Michelin-starred restaurant in one of its outer buildings. But it's also a great museum to learn about the "Vendée Wars", which French history conveniently forgot, as it was a collateral damage to the Revolution (the Vendée was on the side of the king). Interactive and modern, the kids will love it too.
