Sightseeing and must sees

If there is a region that can be considered the land of the villages, this is precisely Umbria, where the charm of the Middle Ages is perfectly preserved and you can breathe in every corner of the villages that dot an area as if suspended in time. From Montefalco to Spello, from Arrone to Preci, passing through Cascia and Bevagna, the atmosphere of an ancient era comes to life like never before, among cobbled streets and postcard views. Umbria also boasts landscapes of inestimable beauty: here are the spectacular Marmore Falls, among the most suggestive in Europe, and the peaceful Lake of Trasimeno.
Historic and picturesque village that surrounds Lake Trasimeno, a few kilometers from Perugia, Panicale retains its typical medieval structure, with the walls that outline it and the houses huddled to form concentric ellipses around the main squares. Important is the presence of olive groves, widespread throughout the area, which provide an acid-free oil and which represents one of the pillars of local cuisine.

Presided over by a formidable medieval fortress and backed by the broad-shouldered Apennines, their summits iced with snow in winter, hillside Spoleto is visually stunning. Ancient arches and a virtually intact amphitheatre tell of its past as a strategic Roman colony, while a series of Romanesque churches testifies to a golden age in the early Middle Ages. In 570 the Lombards made it capital of their duchy and over the next three centuries it flourished, becoming for a brief period one of the most important towns in Italy.

Known for the production of artistic majolica, the village contains a treasure of art, culture and history. Here everything talks about potters and art of ceramics, starting from the historic center and the door of San Michele Arcangelo, on whose sides you can see the remains of the city walls. The custodian of the historic majolica heritage is the Regional Ceramics Museum, located inside the former convent of San Francesco, the oldest Italian museum for ceramics.

The name of this town comes from gens Vibia, a Roman noble family who owned much property in the area. Its urban layout is typical of a medieval castle. Built on a hilltop to dominate the Tiber Valley, its strategic location was the object of the territorial ambitions of the powerful neighbour Todi, which ruled over it for a long time. Repeated rebellions finally forced Todi to raze the town's walls. In 1303 the fortress was rebuilt by the larger city, adding it to its defensive system. The proud character of the residents, however, prevailed until 1596, when Todi finally consolidated its power. In the Napoleonic era the village flourished, opening up to new ideas with initiatives of great importance. It finally became an independent comune after the Second Pontifical Restoration in 1814. ART, CULTURE, ENVIRONMENT The heart of town is home to a real gem, the unique Concordia Theatre. Considered the world's smallest theatre, it can seat 99 spectators in boxes and the stalls. It was inaugurated in1808 and designed in the heyday of Post-Revolutionary French style, named in celebration of the "Concordia tra i Popoli" (or Harmony among the People), a dominant trend of thought all over early 19th century Europe. It was constructed at the behest of several illustrious local families as a place for entertainment and gathering.

In the heart of Umbria, towering impressively over the entire Nestore river valley, stands the historic Castello di Cibottola. The fortress is situated at an altitude of 471 metres in the village of Cibottola, part of the municipality of Piegaro and its prominent position gives visitors truly breath-taking views of the surrounding areas. The most impressive and characteristic feature of the Castle is its heptagonal tower, which stands 20 metres high and has now become a civic tower; it houses a huge bell weighing 500 kg that was positioned within the tower in 1850 after it was donated by the rector of the University of Perugia, Pietro Tocchi. Some renovation work was carried out towards the end of the 20th century. The construction of the castle, which is small in size, seems to date back to 1330 according to a certain legend, but other sources suggest to could date back to as early as the first half of the 9th century. In the Middle Ages, the castle of Cibottola was often visited by important personalities in the military sphere, such as Braccio Fortebracci da Montone, and by representatives of monastic and religious orders, such as St Francis of Assisi and St Anthony of Padua. The castle houses the Chiesa di San Fortunato and once there was also an ancient hospital. The complex is now practically derelict and almost entirely privately owned. However, the door of the drawbridge, the entrance door and a good part of the perimeter walls with a corner tower are still clearly visible, and there is also an underground tunnel measuring some 500 metres in length.
