Hard to fathom. But the Railroad Cafe is fantastic. Absolutely, without a doubt, THE BEST CHEF’S SALAD ANYWHERE. Huge portion. Fresh everything. Most folks could split this easily and be chok full for dinner! Breakfast is good. Hot turkey or beef good, not great. Specials, especially Italian food can be great or mediocre. Usually worth the risk. Cuisine is very low-fi. A Route 66 cafe!

Maybe the best high-end grub in Flagstaff. GREAT APPETIZERS. Best waiters in town by far. Expensive and worth every penny. You’ll be so pleased, you’ll even tip large. Summer outdoor seating is great. Winter time, call ahead for fireplace seating. One of our special occasion faves personally.

Lunch only as far as we’re concerned. Slow service. Great burgers. Get a shake, burger and onion rings. A little slice of heaven for lunch even if you have to tolerate the wait behind ski bums!

I can’t believe I’m recommending a Denny’s. But the breakfasts here are very good. A bit slow to cook and serve. But in West Flagstaff, this is one of the better, affordable breakfast places. Higher priced than other Denny’s, it seems. Convenient, easy access. Free parking, unlike Downtown Flag.

This is maybe the BEST ITALIAN FOOD restaurant in Northern Arizona, if not the world. Get the Route 66 Pizza. Then die and go to heaven! He’s from a baker’s family. I swear, and I’m Italian, BEST CRUST ON THE PLANET. NONE BETTER. If you like pizza and pasta, even if you’re from NYC or Chicago, you have to try this pie. You’ll just die. Tell ‘em not to overcook the crust. And tell ‘em “Dago Joe” from Parks sent you. Nice, cold pitchers of beer and sports TVs just add to the great food experience. We go there at least once a week... and it’s about 20 miles from here!

Great place. Owned by Miguel, former Navy officer. Best bar and huge HD dining in Flagstaff. Food is above mediocre. Unbelievably, we recommend the sirloin medium rare and burgers rare. Chicken not so great. Have your fish grilled 1/2 the regular time or it will be dry. Ask to meet Miguel or Kelley, owner and lead bartender. Great folks. Tell ‘em Dago Joe from Parks recommended you have dinner there! Eat at the bar. Talk to folks next to you. A very fun and friendly place for dinner.

Probably, arguably the best Mexican food in Flagstaff. Hard to believe that a chain could offer best food and best value. Great outdoor seating. Shaded. Bring your dogs and sit outside. Free parking. Our fave Mex restaurant in Flag.

Parks & Nature

The cottage itself is located deep into the Kaibab National Forest. 2 ponds on property attract migrating birds, specifically Canadian Geese and Herons. Local birds include Eagles, Red Tail Hawks, Crows and many different types of smaller species. Great bird watching area. Elk, deer and bear are all around including a "resident elk" named, "Big Ben." Antelope are seen more in the prairies, not so much in small meadows or forested areas. Hiking/biking trails and forest roads galore. Where would you go to be around nature? Just step out of the cottage when you stay here!

Drive-thru wildlife park that you'll visit first. As you leave the drive-thru portion, you'll come upon the walk-thru park. If you time it right, don't miss the wild bird show... keep your head down! Yes. They fly right over you untethered!!! If newly released baby bear cubs are there, you'll have a hard time walking away. They're a riot. Also, the otters are show-offs! Many other animals that are endemic to the area are also featured. And the new Jaguar enclosure is huge and remarkable.

Nearly all who've been describe this as an amazing experience. The cave goes about a mile in. An easy and fun walk in and out, we hear. You'll need flashlights, jeans, at least a sweater in the Summer and a jacket in Spring and Fall. At the end of the cave, we hear the "ceiling" is 30ft tall! Very popular place. So, you won't be alone in the dark!

Take a hike or horseback ride (ask us) over to these cabins going West on Spring Valley Trail (1/8 mile from the cottage). If you keep walking Westerly, you'll start climbing the foothills of Mt. Sitgreaves. If you turn North on Fire Rd 76 and go to the Spring Valley Cabins, look to your left as you approach. That's Eagle Rock. You'll need to be a very, very accomplished rider to take the horses up there. And if you're hiking, you'll need to be in very good shape to reach the top. This is wild, national forest with all sorts of wild animals. At the very least take pepper spray or mace. And if you're proficient, well, I personally take a .40cal handgun and would not take anything smaller.

This tiny but iconic town's main drag, Route 66, was the last piece of asphalt to be replaced by I-40. It's charm and character need to be experienced by visitors. Best Pizza on the Planet is at the Pizza Factory. Iconic dining at Cruisers. Upscale dining at the Red Raven. Shops galore with really great gifts and novelties. Horse drawn carriage rides almost all year round. Gun fights at 7pm most nights especially in summer. And be sure to stop by Wild West Junction and ask if the mayor is around. He owns the joint and is an icon of the community.

Only about an hour away, take I-17 down to the Montezuma Exit. Go left at the stop and visit Arizona's wine country. Then head to Sedona. And when you turn right onto 89, you'll be simply blown away by the famous red rocks, sheer cliffs, and stunning red rock arrangements that make Sedona so famous worldwide. Stay away from the touristy stuff. It's generally way overpriced gifts and clothing. But there can be a few rare finds that would be worth the expense. Just be careful about prices. Enjoy the red rocks for awhile, then go North towards Flagstaff on 89 and enjoy the beauty of the ride thru Oak River Canyon. You'll be back to cooler temps in about 30 minutes!

DO NOT WALK DOWN UNLESS YOU HAVE A HELICOPTER RIDE OUT, RESERVED. Beautiful, turquiose falls and pools await your arrival. Seriously, only strong and well conditioned hikers should attempt the hike out. I met a young Marine at dinner in Flagstaff one late afternoon who said he would NEVER do it again. He described the walk out as “nearly impossible” and that it took all his mental and physical strength to get out. My advice: reserve the chopper ride out or don’t go.
