Martin And Kerstin’s guidebook to Flagstaff and Surrounding Area!

City/town information
Our favorite things to do in the area: -Flagstaff Downtown restaurants and bars -Grand Canyon sightseeing and hiking -Sedona sightseeing and hiking -Arizona Snowbowl skiing and snowboarding -Nordic Village cross country skiing and “Fat Tire Snow” mountain biking - Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course Flagstaff has a great little downtown with lots of restaurants, bars, and a fun night life! There is the "Main" downtown area which is located North of the railroad tracks and then there's the up-and-coming "Southside" downtown area that's South of the railroad tracks. Both are fun and have great places to try! Just a sampling of some of our favorite restaurants: - Pato or Swaddee Thai (Main Downtown) - The Commerce, great sandwiches and drinks (Main Downtown) - Tinderbox Annex (Southside) - Josephine’s, amazing food, a bit expensive, but totally worth it! (Main Downtown) § MartAnnes - Great for breakfast (Hearty Mexican fare - super popular!) - The Toasted Owl (Great for traditional breakfast) - NiMarco’s, good pizza by the slice - The Mayor, Flagstaff's only rooftop patio (Southside, on San Francisco Street). Great views Some of our favorite “watering holes”: - Hops on Birch, mostly just beer (Main Downtown) - Dark Sky Brewery, mostly just beer (Main Downtown) - Pay-n-Take, laid back venue and a favorite of the cycling and running crowd (Main Downtown) - Mother Road Brewery, order pizza which comes from Pizzicletta restaurant next door (Southside) - Lumberyard Brewery, good hearty pub grub (Southside) - Southside Tavern, great beer and food! (Southside) - Flag Terroir Wine Bar & Bistro, huge selection of wine and yummy food (Main Downtown) - Vino Loco, mostly just wine (Main Downtown) - Zane Grey Bar and Ballroom in the Historic Wetherford Hotel, Cool cool place with downtown views from the deck! - Rendezvous at the Historic Hotel Monte Vista, super cool bar to hangout in. The bartenders know what they are doing!

Sightseeing
Great for hiking, mountain biking, unique shopping, and great restaurants. Favorite hikes are out to Devil’s Bridge, the loop around Courthouse/Bell Rock, West Fork, and Cathedral Rock Trail. Great food and drinks can be found at Oak Creek Brewery in Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village. For a very good breakfast, try the Coffee Pot restaurant. I think they boast 101 different omelets on their menu! Best lunch or dinner would definitely be at the Mariposa!

Going to the Canyon is always an awesome Day! Kerstin's favorite Canyon trip is to grab a sandwich at Sprouts grocery store in Flagstaff (they make them there fresh) and head to the Canyon. Take in the rim views for a bit and then hike down the Bright Angel trail to Indian Gardens. Have lunch there and then hike back out. This is a strenuous 9 mile out-and-back hike and we'd only recommend it for those who hike regularly. The hike can take between 4-6 hours depending on your fitness level. Make sure you have plenty of water and good hiking boots and have educated yourself about this hike before heading out. For a lesser traveled route to the Grand Canyon itself, take the East entrance instead of the more travelled South Entrance. Take Highway 89 North out of Flagstaff and follow the signs for the South Rim (note, both the South and the East Entrances take you to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim). We like the East Entrance because there are some beautiful view points along the way as you watch the Canyon start to open up more and more. You can also see the Colorado River from many of these viewpoints whereas you can’t really see the river from the viewpoints at the South Rim itself.

Cool destination on its own or a must see if you're headed to Lake Powell

Downhill Skiing
Arizona Snowbowl is an excellent choice for downhill skiing and snowboarding. Last year they put in a new 6 person high speed ski lift so definitely less waiting than in prior years! If cross country is more your style then try the Nordic Village out on Highway 180 past Snowbowl. Of, just cut your own cross country path right out our back gate!
