Trattoria "La Patria", absolutely not to try but to go there. It is advisable to book, frequented by regular customers and this makes it a guarantee. Do not pay attention to the surliness of the owner, if known he is a straightforward person. In the kitchen his wife and the usual waitress and owner at the tables.

On the table there is always organic oil d.o.p. of the hills of Trequanda (it is a selection of the most significant producers of our municipality); it is a very high quality oil that goes beautifully with our most representative local dishes, such as panzanella, ribollita, white beans and above all our grilled "Chianina meat". An aperitif service based on still or sparkling white wines, prosecco and cocktails is also offered. We also have a small cellar-tasting room, where you can buy, in addition to the precious bottles of wine, the typical products of the area.

Followers of the Benedictine order, the Olivetans founded their monastery in 1313. Blessed Bernardo Tolomei (1272-1348) set up a religious community with the name of Congregation of Santa Maria di Monte Oliveto, on the homonymous mountain halfway between Siena and Arezzo. In 1319 the foundation received the approval of the bishop of Arezzo Guido Tarlati and was included in the Benedictine rule; the following year the construction of the monastery began and in 1344 the Olivetan Congregation received confirmation from Pope Clement VI. Its members devoted themselves mainly to the arts in the service of the liturgy. In the mid-seventeenth century there were six Olivetan monasteries in Tuscany.

The village has remained intact since the 16th century, surrounded by hills and evocative countryside landscapes. You can visit the historic center with its fortress built in 1361 from which you can see the beautiful panorama of the Val d’Orcia and the Crete Senesi. Other buildings worth seeing are the characteristic long and narrow tower of the Palazo dei Priori overlooking the Piazza del Popolo, the Palazzo Vescolvile and the churches of S. Agostino, S. Egidio and San Francesco. You can visit two museums, the Civic and Diocesan one of Sacred Art and the Glass Museum. A few minutes from the town is also the Abbey of Sant’Antimo.

Monteriggioni still retains most of the structures of the thirteenth century and is configured as an absolutely unique place in the panorama of medieval Tuscan villages. The walls, made of stone, embrace the top of a hill with a linear development of about 570 meters. Fourteen rectangular towers protrude from the external surface, while a fifteenth is leaning against the internal curtain. Their grandeur must have been quite remarkable also in the Middle Ages, so much so as to suggest to Dante a famous similarity with the Giants located in Hell: "[...] however that, as on the round circle / Monteriggion of towers, / so the that the well surrounds / towered by half a person / the horrible giants […] ”(Inf., XXXI, vv. 40-44).

Lucignano is a small village and represents one of the most interesting examples of medieval town planning for its elliptical plan with concentric rings. The happy geographical location, on the top of a hill on the border between the ancient possessions of Florence, Arezzo, Siena and Perugia, has made it strategically important since ancient times. Like all frontier lands, it has undergone different cultural influences, but the link with Siena remains the one that more than any other has characterized the urban and artistic development of the village. The artists who created the works of art preserved today in the Municipal Museum are mainly from Siena, including the imposing Golden Tree, a jewel of medieval goldsmithing and a compendium of Franciscan symbolism.

Located about 6 kilometers away from Pienza, Monticchiello stands on a hillock (500 meters above sea level) overlooking the Val d’Orcia. Monticchiello is the typical medieval village still enclosed within the ancient walls which, although partially dilapidated, still retain some defensive towers. This small village was built around the fortress of which the keep dating back to 1256-1257 is preserved. In addition to its artistic and architectural heritage, the village is interesting for its peculiar theatrical tradition. Here, every year, the shows of the "Poor Theater" are staged which see the inhabitants of Monticchiello as protagonists.

Let's start from the Abbey of San Galgano, which is located in the countryside around Chiusdino, a medieval village in the Terre di Siena. A fascinating construction that dates back to 1200 and today is open-air, that is, without a roof, because it has been without a roof since the eighteenth century: even the floor no longer exists and of the ancient splendor of the past only the columns and the majestic facades remain. But the Abbey is also famous for another reason: nearby is in fact the Hermitage of Montesiepi, a chapel where there is the only sword in the stone known in the world: according to the legend, this sword stuck firmly inside a boulder would have belonged to San Galgano, the knight who planted it in the rock just when he decided to abandon all his possessions to devote himself to the spiritual life.

Sant’Antimo is an ancient Abbey inhabited over the centuries by Benedictine monks. The current church was built at the beginning of the twelfth century, but the origins of the Abbey are much older. Legend traces the foundation of Sant’Antimo back to the 9th century, at the time of the Holy Roman Empire, led by Emperor Charlemagne, believed to be the founder of a chapel, called the Carolingian Chapel, corresponding to the current sacristy. Certainly the Abbey existed in the year 814 when Emperor Louis the Pious, successor of Charlemagne, issues a diploma that enriches it with goods and privileges. The large construction site for the current church began in the 12th century, as evidenced by the Charta Lapidaria, an inscription placed in the steps of the main altar which commemorates the donation given to the abbey by the Ardengheschi family in 1118. This year marks the beginning of the period of greatest splendor of Sant'Antimo which becomes one of the richest and most important monasteries in the region on which numerous parish churches, castles and farms depend.
