It is really worth visiting. The architecture of the royal palace, the garden and the exhibitions (a collection of religious art and displays of Newari architecture) are amazing. Don’t forget to stop for /coffee or lunch at the museum’s restaurant (the beautiful garden in the 3rd courtyard of the museum). Your ticket also allows you the access to “Sundari Chowk and Mul chowk” (other entrance on Durbar Square - right side of the museum)

Nagbahal designates two beautiful and peaceful community courtyards linked together. There you will find patches of vegetation, secret paths to some amazing houses and a bright and colorful Buddha Statue. There’s almost no traffic, and a friendly atmosphere with kids playing and people gathering quietly.

Kumbeshwar Temple is a five-storey temple directly north of the Golden Temple. It is believed that this temple was built in 1392, making it the oldest (and highest) temple in Patan. The best times for prayers and offerings are Thursday and Saturday mornings. Wake up early and visit on those days, you won’t regret it ;)

Rudra Varna Mahavihar & Mahaboudha Temple in Patan are the two magnificent monuments. The “Temple of the thousands Buddhas” is a masterpiece of terra-cotta : all the 9999 bricks that make it bear a small image of Buddha. The temple is located near Patan Sundhara. Unfortunately it is totally enclosed with new constructions. The ticket (nps 50) also gives access to another nice ancient buddhist monastery located nearby (Rudravarna Mahabiha/ Uku Bahal).

Chyasal is such a lovely and authentic area, with a great intangible cultural heritage. Mostly inhabited by a lovely farmers’ community, the area is best known for its alcohol brewing and the delicious local Newari food. Our best advice is to wander around the small alleys and courtyards to get immersed in the atmosphere.

WHERE TO EAT?
Café Swotha is is a great spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner at our doorstep! Fresh food, a revolving black board menu, small outdoor area, good wifi and very sweet and dedicated staff. The menu is mainly western but there’s also a very good Daal Bhat (Nepali Thali).

The Inn Patan
Owned and managed by the friendly Ruby, the place (a bit like a Berlins’ underground spot) is hidden in a tiny alley on the right hand side when going from Swotha Square to Durbar Square. Small black board menu only but everything Ruby serves is extra fresh and well prepared (always by him). Very cheap for the quality (between 150 npr and 300 npr). Good atmosphere, open kitchen, local clientele.

Located in the garden of the museum (3rd courtyard), the café has a fabulous and peaceful location, inside a garden (very rare in Patan!) Go there for lunch or a drink after exploring Durbar Square or the museum. The food is pretty average but the setting is worth the trip.

A very pleasant new addition to Patan food scene. Yala restaurant is located just behind Yala Gallery, in a beautiful garden and Newari house. Food is tasty and well prepared, the open kitchen is spotless, the staff is caring... what else? It is without a doubt the place that has the best potential to become Cosy Nepal's favourite recommendation. Tehy serve throughout the day from breakfast (with fresh juice!) to dinner and host some nice events from time to time.

Kwacha is popular (through very much hidden) Newari delights' spot. It offers a wide varieties of delicacies including fried tongue, brain, liver and lungs and the special takkha and nyakhhuna in winter (jelly-like dish made of buffalo meat). There you can also indulge for duck chhoeyla, bara/egg bara (lentils crep), or their famous sekuwa and sukuti (dried meat). We love Kwacha because it really has the "local feel" and Surendra, the cook and owner is very friendly. His Chhyang (Rice Beer) is also the best in town. Take the small alley on the right just before reaching Newa Chhen, go up to the colorful temple and take the alley on the left. Wherever you see a few motorbikes parked in front of a simple looking house with green curtain, you are there (Chyasal, Belachhen Road).

One of the locals favorite for Sherpa Style Momos, Thukpa (HotPot), Sukuti (Marinated Dried Meat) and Chowmein. The famous Tongba is also available there (Millet Alcohol - the booze of Nepali Sherpas). If you want to bend in with the locals, Solu Sherpa is a good place to go. Located inside a small courtyard on hte left hand side (opposite to a very purple house) while going from Durbar Square to Pulchowk. Once inside the courtyard, look on the left, for a white & blue tibetan curtain at the door.

Honacha is the real Bara place! It’s been favored by the locals for 50 years and as such delivers proper Newari Food: "bara and egg barra" (lentils crepes), "alu" (potatoes), "kerao" (chickpeas), “ sekuwa” (cured meat)... Watch out, there’s no menu so just order a mix: ‘’Ali ali sabaï dinus”! Drink home-made Chang or Rakshi to go with (local rice alcohol) The place is located just behind Krishna Temple on Durbar Square . It’s a dark ground floor- part of the experience- or a small terrace on the 1st floor with a view on Durbar Square – Opened only during day time.

We love this little Japanese restaurant set in Restaurant road, Jhamsikhel. Dan Ran has a friendly green garden and serves tasty Japanese home cooking. The sushi here are not the greatest (for best sushi, be sure to go to Kotesu in Lazimpat, inside the Ambassador Hotel) but the bento boxes for lunch are great!

The old royal horse stables have been superbly restored, and now host some high ends restaurants and designer shops for decoration, clothing and paper (Passel, Pipalboat, Marina Papers, Fabindia etc). Our choice for eating: Chez Caroline, of course! the most refined French restaurant in town. Enjoy a luxurious w-e brunch or a fancy dinner set in this beautiful Rana courtyard (looking somehow Mediterranean). Excellent service and extensive menu.

In Lazimpat, near the Radisson, in the yellowish Gaudi type of building. Antoine serves you the best wine available, along with a nice little menu of assorted Bruschetta, mini burgers, “fondue” and “raclette”. Small fine epicery also available in the bar where you can buy good cheese, special condiments, breads and pork products.

Beautiful garden with a lot of different sitting options. The garden is even suitable for winter as the very sweet staff will set up heaters and bonfire for you. Super fresh and tasty food, wine and cocktails, great cheese platters. The place is a real heaven of peace of starters, they are so good! ) Our only regret is that it is located quite far from Patan... Baluwatar area, on the side of the Prime Minister residence in a tiny alley called Aanek Marg Closed on Mondays.

Take the first right on the way to Lagankhel from Mangal Bazaar (the “copper street”) and you will find THE local breakfast spot ! a good glass of masala tea with either a Sel Roti (ring-shaped rice bread/doughnut), a Jeri /jalebi, (thin, fried pretzel of dough soaked in a sweet syrup) or a Swari (a fried flat bread) will help you start the day the local way ;-)

It feels a bit "plastic-y". We much prefer to encourage local businesses but sometimes big supermarket are handy... You will find lots of things from food to hardware.
