great Pubs
it's hard to find a ''bad '' pub..but here are some of our recommendations . Pubs in Ireland are our ''living rooms''....go there to meet and chat , drink coffee during the day. And so many provide great food at good prices so don't assume it's only for drinking.... at night let your hair down and enjoy the fun and ''craic' ( our word in Ireland for having a great time). Irish people are so warm and friendly ...so here's the best place to mingle with the locals
always a great spot .... whether for a bowl of soup and a sandwich during the day, or a great atmosphere at night with live music regularly. A great Cork pub

places to visit in cork city
these are the things you shouldn't miss...if you can fit it all in. There's so so much to see and do, and of course your interests may differ from others....some love castles and cathedrals......others love countryside and scenery...while others shopping and coffee. So this is a snapshot ...a mix of all different things that you will love and we recommend
Only a 10 minute walk from the city centre to the heart of the university, Stroll around the quadrangle, through the main building where a visitors centre is located on the ''stone corridor'' with ancient celtic Ogham Stones.. (book a fab tour if you can...so informative and so cheap)
Go visit the Honan Chapel , with it's beautiful celtic carvings, stained glass windows and mosaic floors.
Enjoy the beautiful grounds of the campus...it's all free and a wonderful place
If you have heard of Boolean Allegera , the basis of computer language, you may know of George Boole who was professor of mathematics way back in the 1850's.

Corks best known landmark and loved by The Cork people...even though we call it ''the 4 faced liar''. (this is because there are 4 clocks on its walls , and none of them tell the correct time...us Irish don't mind, it's a great excuse to be late)
The best part is climbing past the bells and up onto the balcony where you have a great view of Cork City
(the passages are narrow in places , and also if you have bad knees or hips it might be awkward)

there has been a church here since approximately the year 500AD....this one built from 1856. This is the original site where saint Finbarr built a monastery and Cork City grew. A beautiful neogothic cathedral and the pride of Cork.
There an approx €5 fee for going inside...so if you're interested in cathedrals it's well worth it...

another beautiful neogothic Catholic church. It's by the famous architect Pugin...the interior is stunning...and it's free.
Please be mindful to be quiet as there are always people praying inside, or services may be going on. A gem in the city centre...if churches are ''your thing''

the Heart of the city in terms of food....Trading since 1788 the current mix of traders in the English Market represents a diversity as broad as at any time over the centuries of it's existence and is an essential item on any visitor's agenda – even the Queen of England stopped off here in May 2011!
Small stalls sit alongside larger businesses. Fledgling traders beside long-established family businesses passed down from one generation to the next. Meats and fish, herbs and spices, fruit and vegetables, sauces and oils, chocolates and cakes, cheeses and pastas – the Market caters for all culinary tastes and all eating occasions!!

places to visit outside the city
As a tourguide these are some of my recommendations. There is so much to see and do, and of course the weather will play a part too. You won't get to see everything but I recommend some of the things that you should factor in if possible...and of course within your field of interest.
Only a short 20-25 minute journey north west from Cork city, Blarney is a pretty town that has grown up around one of the world's greatest legends: the famous Blarney Stone.
Visit the Blarney Woolen Mills ( the largest sore in the world for all things Irish- from Fridge magnet souveneirs, aran sweaters...waterford crystal and much more, The variety is incredible and the prices make it a firm favourite with local too. So you know it's not just for tourists.
The village of Blarney is small and sweet
And don't miss the Blarney Castle. It was built nearly six hundred years ago by one of Ireland's greatest chieftains, Cormac MacCarthy, and has been attracting attention beyond Munster ever since. Over the last few hundred years, millions have flocked to Blarney, making it a world landmark and one of Ireland's greatest treasures. The grounds are beautiful...make sure you visit the ''Rock Close''!!!!!!
For over 200 years, world statesmen, literary giants, and legends of the silver screen have joined the millions of pilgrims climbing the steps to kiss the Blarney Stone and gain the gift of eloquence. Its powers are unquestioned but its story still creates debate.

kinsale is simply charming..it's the gourmet capitol of Ireland with amazing pubs, restaurants and hotels where you can enjoy great food, drink in a wonderful atmosphere. As we only live a 20-25 min drive from here we often go for lunch or sit by the water edge with a bag of fish and chips from Dino's on the quayside. When you think of brightly coloured buildings and windy streets all steeped in centuries of History- this is a great spot. Check out Charles fort on the way , and i highly recommend a fantastic tour you can book with ''Don and Barry'' . google this or ask at the tourist info centre . I have done Barrys tour several times myself and it's outstanding. Don't miss it
