Best of Ithaca - Recommendations from Shelterbelt Farm

Favorite Local Cafes, Bars, and Restaurants
Just 2 miles down the road from Shelterbelt Farm, this place is the heart of Brooktondale. It's a general store, cafe, bar, music and arts venue all in one. They have family game nights, open mic nights, and lots of live music. They also have a few dozen beers on tap, fabulous sandwiches, a different hot meal served every Wed night, and great coffee. You can pick up snacks and other groceries too.

If you want to treat yourself to a special breakfast, this is the place to go. It has the tastiest and most creative breakfast options in town, in a gorgeous timber-and-stone building, and sources many ingredients form local farms.

This place is a little hard to find, but well worth it when you do. The food is out of this world, produced by the brilliant Chef Sam. The best meal I've had in my 15 years in Ithaca was at Gola Osteria; it's our favorite place for special celebratory meals.

Agava is a fun stop for cocktails, appetizers, or a full meal. The food is Southwest-inspired, sourced from many local farms, and always tasty. They have a large outdoor covered patio and host weekly trivia night. Kids eat free on Tuesday nights!

Favorite Waterfalls and Hikes
This is probably the most impressive waterfall in Ithaca, and is viewable from the road for those short on time or not up for a full hike! You can walk to it in 5 min. if you do want a closer look. Kids often enjoy skipping rocks here and looking for treasures among the shale scree.

This picturesque trail follows Cascadilla Gorge from Collegetown (across the street from Collegetown Bagels), ending downtown just a few blocks from the Commons. On a hot day you can walk in the water, instead of alongside it, and it's a fantastic place to take kids to splash and play in the shallow cascades. The whole trail takes less than a half-hour to walk.

Follow Enfield Falls Road to the Upper entrance to Treman State Park. The gorge loop here offers dramatic views of cliffs and waterfalls, illustrating the point about Ithaca being "gorges."
