This sand and shingle beach is most well-known for the Elephant, or Steppe Mammoth which was discovered in 1990, dating back to the Ice Age and one of the oldest fossil elephants to be found in the UK. It was very exciting and caused quite a stir in Norfolk!
The remains were found in the cliff face, and if you’re geologically minded, it's an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and for this reason, an important Norfolk beach, especially as it forms part of the largest chalk reef in Europe. It's also great for rockpooling and fossil hunting!

West Runton Beach
Water LaneThis sand and shingle beach is most well-known for the Elephant, or Steppe Mammoth which was discovered in 1990, dating back to the Ice Age and one of the oldest fossil elephants to be found in the UK. It was very exciting and caused quite a stir in Norfolk!

Edgefield HillThis Green Flag awarded park, which is just a short drive from Holt, is a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of the North Norfolk coastline. Here you can totally escape and go deep into the pretty woodland, meandering along one of the many coloured trails. It is perfect for cycling, walking and picnics (and dogs are welcome).
Just 10 minutes drive from Holt, this National Trust park is famous for its vast collection of rhodendrons and azaleas. Climb to the top of the towers to experience breathtaking views of the beautiful landscape, the North Norfolk coast and maybe a steam train passing through.
Spend a day here exploring 1000 acres of varying habitat including woodland, parkland and cliff top. Look out for wildlife - 3 species of deer can be seen alongside a wide variety of birds and butterflies.
