Portobello is a short bus ride away and is the nearest city beach where you can find an array of (dog friendly) bars and cafes along the promenade and interesting local shops & galleries on the High St . It is busy with locals on sunny days during the holidays and dogwalkers all year round .
There is a indoor swimming pool here that has a wonderful turkish bath that is well worth a visit.

It is busy with locals on sunny days during the holidays and dogwalkers all year round .

Here you are just 5-10 mins from the foot of the Royal Mile which reaches from Holyrood Palace to the Castle at the top. It has many museums ( Huntly House, The People's Story, the Museum of childhood ) and galleries as well as shops, bars and cafes along its length. The top part of the Royal Mile from where it intersects the North Bridge , is where you will find a host of performers and street artists during the Fringe Festival. Almost at the top there is Whisky tasting and the Camera Obscura ( worth a visit on a rainy day ) before you find yourself on the Castle Promenade , where the Military Tattoo is held each year and from where the Fireworks display is performed . During the Edinburgh Festival virtually every bar becomes a venue for comedy and performance so you will always find something to distract on your wanderings up the Mile. There is of course a multitude of tourist souvenir shopsalong its length too.
