Located between Springfield SD and Running Water SD, is our favorite place to spend time. The Bottom Road is a 7 mile long minimum maintenance road (don’t travel on it if there has been a lot of rain…it is an “at your own risk situation”). It is incredibly beautiful. For much of it there is the river on one side and an oxbow on the other. There is access to fishing and great bird watching (Eagles, Heron, Pelicans, Sandhills Crane, Geese, Ducks…). At dusk you will see the wildlife (deer, fox, coyote, beaver, muskrat, raccoon). It is a good area to kayak due to all of the chutes and canals.

On the South Dakota side of the Chief Standing Bear Bridge. On Sept. 2, 1806, on their return trip, Lewis and Clark met up with a group of Yankton Sioux. After realizing they are friends, the two groups smoke several pipes and exchange news of what has happened in the two years since the expedition first passed through the area. Today the Chief Standing Bear Bridge spans the Missiouri River near this location. A scenic lookout offers a spectacular view of the river. Also, the Native American Scenic Byway begins near Running Water.

Near Santee NE. The word Tatanka is a Lakota word that translates to buffalo, and the great buffalo will forever remain a part of the historic culture in northeast Nebraska. The Santee Sioux Nation plans for Tatanka to become synonymous with great golf there as well. Golf course designer Paul Albanese has designed and is developing the new Tatanka Golf Club, which is scheduled to open in 2015. Seeding of the course was recently completed. "This is easily one of the nicest pieces of property I have ever been involved with, and it has been incredibly interesting," Albanese said regarding the land that features bold movements of rolling hills and ridges with views that stretch for more than 30-40 miles. Ron Whitten, architecture editor for Golf Digest, described it as "Nebraska's Sandhills with trees," as he included it among a group of sneak peaks in his listing of Best New Courses in 2014. During the construction, Albanese researched the history and culture of the Sioux Nation in order to incorporate cultural stories into the design. With each creation of a fairway, green and bunker his team would discuss ideas presented by the Sioux Nation.

This level course sits in the middle of old Niobrara. Niobrara was moved south to higher ground in 1975 due to persistent swamp like conditions from Missouri River overflow. The land was converted to a golf course by local volunteers. In the summer of '93 an unplanned series of hazards developed when basements of houses from old Niobrara became sink holes. Several fairways featured the chasms which played havoc with golf scores. Flooding later forced the move of some holes to higher ground.
