For 100 years, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has served as the heart of Arlington National Cemetery. As a sacred memorial site and the grave of three unknown American service members, the Tomb connects visitors with the legacy of the United States armed forces throughout the nation’s history. It stands as a people’s memorial that inspires reflection on service, valor, sacrifice and mourning. Since November 11, 1921, the Tomb has provided a final resting place for one of America’s unidentified World War I service members, and Unknowns from later wars were added in 1958 and 1984.

DC Dos and Don'ts
D.C. is about a 45 min.-1 hour drive. Plan to walk...a lot....so wear comfortable shoes. All of the museums are free of charge. Be aware that, during the school year, you will run into field trip groups. There is so much to see and do! Do not plan to leave the Airbnb until after 8:00 am to get there. When returning to the Airbnb, avoid leaving DC between the hours of 3 and 5. You WILL hit traffic if you do! Find a spot for dinner...lots of great restaurants in DC...and then leave. Put our address into your GPS and you will find alternate routes which will avoid traffic tie ups.
