“Jurassic” hike off Kaloko Rd.
This hike is about 45 minutes and can be very windy. I recommend tennis shoes and a light layer. There is an option to ride down with locals for a small fee.

Steep but short hike down, around 20 minutes. Can be very muddy if it has recently rained so I recommend proper footwear. There is a black sand beach and river at the bottom. Please respect local signage as this is a sacred place.
Stop in Hawi on the way up and check out the cute downtown.
I recommend Fresh off the Grid for a cold refreshment on your way back!

Pololu Valley
Steep but short hike down, around 20 minutes. Can be very muddy if it has recently rained so I recommend proper footwear. There is a black sand beach and river at the bottom. Please respect local signage as this is a sacred place.

This is a public beach but parking is very limited. Your best bet is to try to get there as early as possible on a week day. There is a good chance the lot is full so check out Hapuna Beach for a back up!

Make sure to walk all the way to the right edge of the lava, to step off into the water. There are literally “two steps” making it very easy to get in and out. While you are here check out the Place of Refuge just steps away!

This is a must do on the Big Island! I highly recommend Manta Ray Dives of Hawaii or Hawaii Ocean Adventures, but all companies end up being together in the water. If you get seasick, there are boats that leave right from Keauhou Bay if you did not want to take the ride from Honokohau Harbor
