Food scene

Moose's Tooth is hands down Alaska's favorite restaurant. Amazing pizza, beer, and so much more. Definitely put them on your list for while you're here! Be aware, however, that this spot is not a secret, and wait times during busy periods can regularly be well over an hour. You can grab a beer to enjoy on the patio while you wait, order your food to-go, or visit during off hours to make sure you get a table!

We love Suite 100 for a evening out. It's not fancy (Alaska doesn't really do fancy, even at the highest end restaurants), but the food is always fresh and delicious.

Of Alaska's many breweries, Anchorage Brewing Company is certainly one of the very best! Their beers are always fantastic, and if you're into sour beer, they always have something on tap with enough pucker to satisfy. Cheers!

Arctic Roadrunner is an Anchorage institution! It's a hopping spot, but largely with locals, not tourists. They've got great burgers (including halibut burgers and other local specialties) and shakes, and they're right on the creek so outdoor dining is scenic. This place is a big hit with kids! Note: they're a cash only spot!

Petting zoos in Alaska are a little different! At the reindeer farm you'll head into the reindeer pen with the whole herd to feed and pet them. You can give Rocky the moose a kiss, and meet a variety of other big animals.

*CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO COVID* The Portage Glacier Visitor's Center is a super fun stop for families and groups. You'll learn a bunch about Alaska and can walk along the glacier-fed water. The glacier has retreated enough now that it's no longer visible from the visitor's center like it used to be, but you can take a ferry boat ride out to see it now instead!

It doesn't get any more majestic than Denali National Park. Bring your binoculars for the best wildlife viewing in the state. If you go, you'll want to plan to stay at least one night in the park or nearby, because it's quite a trek to get up there. Plan on a 6hr drive from Anchorage, or take the train! Everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime--there's no place like it on earth!

If you time your trip just right, you might see dozens (or more!) beluga whales surfacing! You might also catch a massive bore tide--one of the largest in the world. Walk out onto the point for the best views, but pay attention to signage about where it's safe to roam and where it's not.

An easy hike on a paved path that'll take you right up to a glacier! You'll also learn about the effects of global warming as the informational markers along the path share info about where the glacier used to be before retreating to its current location.

The Coastal Trail is a one of the most beautiful paved trails in the country! It runs 11 miles from downtown Anchorage to the chalet at Kincaid Park, skirting the fault line of the '64 earthquake, forested areas, moose habitat, and showing off sweeping vistas where you can spot beluga whales and Denali in a single view. On foot or on bike, it's a great way to stretch your legs and enjoy Anchorage's best sights!

Flattop is Anchorage's most visited peak and a great introductory hike. It's 1.5mi (one way) of easy to moderate hiking, with the most challenging part at the very end when a short distance of boulder climbing and navigating a scree field are required to reach the very top (although stopping in the saddle below the summit will give you equally impressive views, so don't feel obligated to push all the way to the top). If you want something more challenging, Wolverine Peak is a 5.5mi hike from the same parking lot that will get your blood pumping!

You access Whittier through a giant tunnel--the longest tunnel highway in North America! AND, it's only one way, shared with both cars and trains. So just getting to Whittier is an adventure! Once there, you'll see that all the town's residents live in the same building--an old military barracks. The town is great for sightseeing, with lots of ocean and mountain views and creatures. This is also a great place to catch a whale-watching boat from, where you might see orcas, humpbacks, belugas, eagles, seals, sea lions, otters, and more!

여행 팁

준비물

Dress down; layer up!

Alaskans don't do dress up clothes. Even in upscale restaurants and other luxury locations, you'll find hiking boots and flannel. Your footwear especially should be extremely practical, and you'll want layers appropriate to a variety of weather conditions.
관습과 문화

Respect the Wildlife!

Please keep in mind that you're in Alaska and wildlife is abundant! They are wonderful to appreciate and photograph from a safe distance, and the responsibility is yours to respect their space. Consider bringing bear spray when you're on foot in the outskirts of the town and beyond. Don't keep food outside or in vehicles. Remember that the moose may seem docile, but do not approach, feed, or put yourself in a position to test their temperament, as they are responsible for deaths every year. Especially in the spring, watch for cubs and calves; where they are, mom is sure to be close!
