Cades Cove
The John P. Cable Grist Mill is an old, water powered grist mill which has been preserved much as it looked when it was an operating mill. It is very photogenic.

The Dan Lawson Place, which was originally constructed in 1856, is a transitional piece of architecture – the home features both sawn lumber and hewn logs. In addition, the pioneer cabin featured a modern chimney made out of bricks. The property where the cabin is built was originally owned by Peter Cable, Dan’s father-in-law.

Along with his brother Thomas, William received Tennessee land grants covering the Cades Cove area in recognition of their contribution to the war. In turn, the brothers invited relatives from other parts of the country to buy up land and settle in Cades Cove, thus starting the initial settlement boom in the region.

Carter Shields Cabin is said to have been built around 1830. It’s a simple, 1 bedroom cabin, and it’s the only building left remaining on the property. You’ll see the cabin situated in a clearing, with a covered porch. It also features a small loft. In the springtime, the dogwood trees bloom, painting a beautiful picture. Photographers love coming to this spot because of the combination of the trees, the split-rail fence and the deer who frequent the area. In fact, it’s one of the most photographed historic structures in Cades Cove!

The John Oliver historical cabin, which is set back from Cades Cove Loop Road, is the first historical structure you will come to. The parking area for this cabin is immediately past Sparks Lane. John and Lucretia Oliver, the original owners of the cabin, were the first permanent white settlers in Cades Cove.
