Find yourself 2,000-ft high (read: bring a jacket, like mama taught ya!) and winsomely surrounded by a lakeline tousled with alder, in the rustic Tobyhanna State Park. The 17-acre Tobyhanna Lake will keep your gills golden, and a campground with hot showers and flush toilets will keep your bod pretty spiffy too! Hike through a range of trails, with offerings for everyone from the timid novice to the gallant-hearted rock trotter(yes, a few of the trails require some fancy footwork!) Word to the risk-takers—stay on-trail—old, live artillery shells have been found from time to time. Yhew!

Give a toot about the Golden Age of rail travel in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania. Steamtown lets you experience what it was like to ride an authentic steam train. This well-preserved rail yard displays several types of engines and cars. Each one has its own rich history. The history museum showcases a timeline of railroads in the United States. A restored roundhouse keeps the old engines safe from the weather. The yard itself is where the action happens. That's where the locomotives huff, puff, and whistle while they work. Sidetracks in the yard also contain beautifully restored train cars. Check out a mail car, a cut-out of a steam engine, a red caboose, and a Union Pacific Big Boy. The Big Boy was one of the largest engines ever produced. There are eight left in existence, and Steamtown has the only one east of the Mississippi. Board a train for a short ride over the Lackawanna River or see the Nay Aug Tunnel. Rides cost $5 per person on a first-come, first-served basis. These shorter rides occur from April to December. These passenger cars are not air-conditioned, so dress appropriately. Longer excursions in the fall head to the surrounding countryside on fall foliage tours. A special Steamtown Holiday Express takes kids to nearby Moscow to meet Santa during the last weekend of November. It's the perfect way to start the holidays. Plenty of campsites outside of Scranton offer a place to rest after a long day. If you listen carefully as you drift off to sleep, you might hear an echo of a train whistle in the distance.

This large park in the western foothills of the Pocono Mountains is a blast from the past. Just look at Boulder Field, a National Natural Landmark that's been around for 20,000 years. Strap those shoelaces for a trek across 26-foot-long boulders. For more adventure, fish the trout streams, cross country ski, or hike 40+ miles of trails. If you want to gawk at crashing waterfalls, try the (unfortunately named) Shades of Death Trail. To cool down in the summer, Sand Spring Lake is your spot. This lush getaway is a two to three hour drive from Harrisburg, Philadelphia. It's only about an hour from Allentown, Scranton and Wilkes Barre. Once you get here, you have a host of camping options. The camping cottages, deluxe cottages, and tent and trailer campground all have vault or flush toilets nearby. Many campsites have electric hook-ups. Just remember to leave the booze at home—alcohol isn't allowed in the campground.

Hike, boat, and fish along one of the most pristine rivers in the northeastern United States. The Upper Delaware River, in New York and Pennsylvania, is the only undammed river in this part of America. It's also prime fishing territory. The waterway gives kayakers of varying experience a chance to float down a historic river. Rolling hills dot the landscape through five counties and 73 miles of lush forests, quaint riverside villages and wildlife habitats. Some of the towns along the river have changed little since the 1940s, so a vacation here can take you back to another era. Migratory fish species are plentiful. Pick out a spot along the banks of the river, or float down the Upper Delaware to get close to the water. Large rocks in the middle of some sections create rapids, while other parts of the river form eddies where fish congregate and feast on plants and bugs. There's plenty to do if you're not into fishing or boating. There are festivals in the summer and fall. The small towns around the river have a lot to celebrate. Surrounding mountains and hills, such as the Poconos, offer scenic drives and hiking trails. Fall foliage treks provide fantastic photo ops as you walk among nature's vibrant palette of reds, oranges, and yellows. Warmer months, from June to October, allow for some great camping trips. Pick your ideal spot in the hills or near the river. There's enough scenery and wide open spaces in the Upper Delaware region for everyone.
