Situated on a hilltop 800 feet above sea level the stone fort was probably built on an earthen rath. The origins of the Grianan of Aileach fort are dated back to 1700 B.C. It is linked to the Tuatha de Danann who invaded Ireland before the Celts and built stone forts on top of strategic hills. The Grianán is located on the western edge of a small group of hills that lie between the upper reaches of Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle. Although the hill is comparatively not that high, the summit dominates the neighbouring counties of Derry, Donegal and Tyrone. Located at the edge of the Inishowen peninsula, it is 10 kilometres northwest of the Historic Walled City of Derry. There are excellent views from the fort across Lough Swilly, Lough Foyle and the Inishowen Peninsula. It is claimed that on a clear day, five of the nine counties of Ulster can be seen from this viewpoint.

Ireland’s Most Northerly Point Malin Head has witnessed some of the worlds most significant events from the first telecommunication in Ireland at Lloyds Signal Tower, to the passing of the German Fleet at the end of World War 1. The Malin Head Coastline is rugged, unspoilt and spectacular. The area is steeped in history and folklore. Malin Head is an area for all tastes, including walking, fishing, swimming, photography, studying rock formations or rare flora and it is close to Inishowen’s splendid golf courses. Discover some of the largest sand dunes in Europe once you enter the Malin Head area via the coastal road, along the north of Trawbreaga Bay at Lagg. Or view the famous Five Finger Strand from Knockamany Bens. Lloyds Signal Tower The circuit of the Head will take you past the radio station, built in 1910, and round the coast to Banbas Crown, the northern tip of Ireland. Here, a tall derelict building known locally as The Tower, was constructed in 1805 by the Admiralty and later used as a Lloyds signal station which served as a most important news link connecting America and Europe. Cliff Top Walk It is also a perfect starting point for a ramble along the cliffs to Hells Hole, a remarkable subterranean cavern 250 feet long and 8 feet wide, into which the tide rushes with great force. Nearby is a picturesque natural arch called the Devils Bridge. Inishtrahull Island From Banbas Crown, Inishtrahull Island and its nearly two hundred year old lighthouse can be seen to the northeast. Malin Head is the sunniest place in Ireland and further out to the east on a clear day you can see the Scottish hills.
