There are 11 steam trains in Wales – https://www.greatlittletrainsofwales.co.uk/ - but our favourite is the Talyllyn which runs between Tywyn and Nant Gwernol (and back again) and takes dogs. We often just go from Abergynolwyn to Dolgoch, which is enough to get the steam train experience, do the walk up the falls (picture above), have a cup of tea (& obligatory piece of cake) or perhaps an ice cream at the café if the sun is out and then return. For up to date timetable info here is the link: https://www.talyllyn.co.uk/

A busy little town that has a a good feel and a long beach. There are art galleries, cafes and independent shop just behind the beach. It is a really good place to go crabbing too.

A great walk or cycle along a disused railway line with the George III pub a good stopping point, a nature reserve at Paemenpool and picnic benches at several points along the route. Barmouth is at the other end from Dolgellau, about 8 miles away and there are regular buses between the two as well.

A visit to Harlech for the town with its individual shops and cafes, the beach which has the softest and whitest sand and the castle which is a ‘proper’ castle with towers to climb and ramparts to view the surrounding area , always pleases

A beautiful place either to walk up to see the view down the Mawddach estuary and across to Cader Iris and the Rhinnogs, or the less energetic but just as scenic walk around the lakes

A very relaxing atmosphere up the waterfalls, which never seem to end. We often stop off when doing the Talylyn train ride, walk up to the falls and have a picnic then either catch the next train back or walk through the woods back to our car. The dogs particularly love the water and the woods.

This 2 -3 mile walk goes down one side of the Torrent river and back up the other. Loved particularly by the Victorians a lot of work has been done to maintain the paths recently. Again our dogs love it and it’s good for kids and adults alike.

This is actually known as Electric Mountain and has miles of roads inside the mountain, as well as the power station and makes a fascinating day trip

The ruins of an 11th century Cistercian Abbey which contributed to the building of Harlech Castle. They were engineers too and developed the water conduits that fed the Abbey. It was damaged in the 13 century and never flourished after that with it finally being abandoned in the dissolution of the monasteries.

Barmouth has a lovely beach, a good high street, a ferry to Fairbourne, super walks above the town and is at the end of the Mawddach trail from Dolgellau. Well worth a visit.

Great placeto walk, whether you go around Dinas Oleu itself which has views over to Fairbourne and Cardigan Bay or do the Panorama walk which looks down the Mawddach estuary.

This looks like a steep rock climb but if you approach it from the other side it is a easy scramble up a mostly grassy track. And,wow, the view from the top is worthwhile.
