The Santo Stefano lake was a small artificial water basin located in Milan next to the Ca' Granda, a building that once housed the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan and now houses the University of Milan. It was used to moor boats from the Milanese canals that transported Candoglia marble for the construction site of the Duomo in Milan.
The small lake of Santo Stefano was built at the end of the 14th century and was buried in 1857 for reasons of public hygiene. It was located at the intersection of the modern via Laghetto and via Francesco Sforza, where there is still an open space. It was also called a new lake to distinguish it from the small lake of Sant'Eustorgio, which was built before 1211 and for this reason was also called an old lake.
