Food Scene
La Especial has been our favorite Mexican Food Restaurant forever! The food is the best Mexican food anywhere, the salsa is perfect (a rare thing), the atmosphere is warm and casual and it is great for any size party. Everything is good from awesome enchiladas to fluffy, yummy chile rellanos to packed tacos. The chicken soup is famous! The cabbage salad is excellent; You don't have to call ahead. Enjoy!

I have heard this is a very good fish restaurant. It is just down the hill from the house so very convenient. I plan to go in person so I can give you a better idea.

Beaches, Beaches and did you say Beaches?
What are you here for if not to go to the beach at least once!
Here are the best and closest; all are gorgeous!
Moonlight Beach is the best beach for families. There is a large parking lot, lots of lifeguards, restrooms and showers, a snack bar, volleyball nets on the beach and probably more stuff I am missing. There also tend to be the most people there in the summer so if you want to avoid a super crowd on a weekend go to one of the others I recommend

400 B StMoonlight Beach is the best beach for families. There is a large parking lot, lots of lifeguards, restrooms and showers, a snack bar, volleyball nets on the beach and probably more stuff I am missing. There also tend to be the most people there in the summer so if you want to avoid a super crowd on a weekend go to one of the others I recommend
Stone steps is the site of the famous Stone Steps surfing contest. It is a locals spot and for great reason-beautiful beach, great waves stretching out in beautiful lines, and the possibility to be away from the crowd. There is a stairway at the top of South El Portal to get down to the beach. There is no parking lot so getting there early you may find a parking spot closer to the stairs than if you wait until noon.

Stonesteps
340 S El Portal StStone steps is the site of the famous Stone Steps surfing contest. It is a locals spot and for great reason-beautiful beach, great waves stretching out in beautiful lines, and the possibility to be away from the crowd. There is a stairway at the top of South El Portal to get down to the beach. There is no parking lot so getting there early you may find a parking spot closer to the stairs than if you wait until noon.
Beacon's Beach is considered a locals beach. There is a lifeguard and a stairway to the beach. It is not pristine or groomed like Moonlight is so there will be kelp on the beach.

Beacon Beach
948 Neptune AveBeacon's Beach is considered a locals beach. There is a lifeguard and a stairway to the beach. It is not pristine or groomed like Moonlight is so there will be kelp on the beach.
It is an awesome beach to go to and of course a favorite of mine growing up in Leucadia,
Point is the closest beach to our house and you can easily walk there. Ponto has a large parking lot and restrooms. There is a lifeguard. This beach is more accessible for folks with problems getting around. There are no stairs. It can be more windy though and not as pretty as the other beaches on my list. I used to enter the beach this way every day on my horse after school and ride all the way to Moonlight and back home.
No horses, or dogs for that matter, are allowed on the beach now.

Ponto State Beach Jetty
Point is the closest beach to our house and you can easily walk there. Ponto has a large parking lot and restrooms. There is a lifeguard. This beach is more accessible for folks with problems getting around. There are no stairs. It can be more windy though and not as pretty as the other beaches on my list. I used to enter the beach this way every day on my horse after school and ride all the way to Moonlight and back home.
No horses, or dogs for that matter, are allowed on the beach now.

It is a beautiful beach and you can walk north or south to find your spot. Great waves, a bit of reef at times under your feet.

You park at the bottom in the parking lot by the beach, walk uo the hill and explore the trails and hike down the bluff trail to the beach. Then walk the beach back to your car. The cliffs are beautiful and so is the beach. There are restrooms and a lifeguard at the beach so you can hit the beach after your hike.

The Del Mar Racetrack is East of the beach and racehorse have been known to cool their legs here. The dogs have a blast romping around and the kids will like it to because the lagoon runs into the sea here so it is possible to wade at the place they join. Here are the rules:
