A buzzing Spanish bakery, just over the cross road opposite the tube station. We always buy the Granier loaf (marked with a "G") – the iced coffee is amazing too (and only £1.50).

This place is always busy, so we recommend booking in advance – make sure you ask for a table upstairs or outside on their heated pavement! A pianist plays most evenings.
Local vegetarian Indian restaurant. This place must have been here forever, it's not romantic fine dining but does have a certain atmosphere. The food is fresh, tasty and cheap and you can bring your own alcohol.

Stoke Newington Church Street is full of independent shops, bars, pubs and restaurants. It is always busy at the weekend, but a certainly a good place to have a late breakfast and people watch. Clissold Park is a lovely place for a picnic.

If it's a nice day and you've got comfortable shoes, we really recommend walking down the Regent's Canal westwards towards Regents Park. The towpath will take you through the famous Camden Markets, Primrose Hill, London Zoo and Regents Park. This park is situated in trendy Stoke Newington. Always full of young families and picnic-ers on a hot day. There's a big playground for kids, skate park, tennis courts, deer park and paddling pool in the summer.

Our favourite Sunday stroll is alongside the little-known River Lea. Start in Marksfield Park and walk east as far as the Olympic Park in Stratford. Stop off in Springfield Park, Walthamstow Marshes and Clapton along the way. The Chatsworth Road has a lovely market and nice cafes at the weekend. And we recommend a pint in the (unglamorous!) Hope and Anchor pub en route where you can watch the narrow boats go by.
