La Jolla Bay is a Marine Protected Area that is home to a thriving ecosystem that boasts a high concentration of sea life, has a natural boat launch, which allows safe ocean entry year-round, and is famous for its Sea Caves and Marine Reserve. No experience is required. Great for all skill levels. Your guide will kick things off with a paddle tutorial on the beach. If surf exists, we will help push your kayak through any breakers. As we paddle through La Jolla’s Marine Reserve keep an eye out for Seals, Sea Lions, Sea Turtles, Pelicans, Dolphin and Gray whales in the fall/winter. Note: We cannot guarantee sea life. If conditions are safe, we will help guide your kayak into Emerald Cave. If it's not safe to enter Emerald Cave, we will still paddle out & explore La Jolla's World-Famous Marine Reserve. This area is covered by the ocean half of the day- during high tide- and the pools are exposed at low tide, which creates a unique, yet fragile, habitat for lots of small invertebrates and fish! At our meeting spot, I will give you a brief talk on safety and tide pool rules, as all San Diego tide pools have a strict "no collection" policy. Once we understand how to tide pool safely and respectfully, the adventure begins! Your visit with Bike & Kayak Tours, Inc. will begin at our storefront, located just two short blocks from the beach. Note: If we determine that the water conditions are unsafe to enter the Clam's Cave you will be provided with a voucher to enter the only land accessible cave called Sunny Jim's cave. Update: We have been OPEN and SAFE since May, 2020 The La Jolla Ecological Reserve is the premiere kayak and snorkeling spot on California’s coast. To fully interact with all the amazing sea life in the area, our kayak and snorkel tour is a great option. The coolest part bout this experience is you get to see what's above and below the water! We kayak over by Sunny Jim's cave, where your guide will anchor the kayaks together. While snorkeling we see sea lions, seals, bat rays, Garibaldi (Nemo's Cousin), and sometimes sea turtles. Note: we cannot guarantee what sea life or any sea life we will encounter. La Jolla Bay is the premier snorkeling spot along Southern California's coast, but there are days that the visibility might only be 5 feet or can be as good as 50 feet. This tour is 2 hours and typically we snorkel for 20-30 minutes, max. Being able to swim is advised. If conditions are not safe enough to anchor the kayaks at Sunny's Jim's cave we will instead snorkel the kelp forest. Note: We DO NOT kayak or snorkel inside any of any caves on this tour. We will be snorkeling in Mission Bay, a calm, flat body of water that feeds into the Pacific Ocean. Being in the bay, we typically encounter small fish, interesting algae, and lots of invertebrates, including sea slugs, octopus, urchins, and sea stars! After a brief safety and snorkel etiquette talk, we will explore the area for one hour. I will point out and provide detailed information on the flora and fauna we encounter during the experience! *If you are a non-swimmer, feel free to book a private tour and/or message me to see if this is the right experience for you. Decompress and enjoy an afternoon by the water with relaxing music and a paint brush. Miranda, a skilled art instructor will guide you step by step through a Bob Ross style acrylic painting. You will learn the basics of acrylic painting, such as color matching, manipulating a paintbrush, visualizing perspective, and more. The class will start with a brief introduction and then we will hop right into the painting! Throughout the class you will have time to take breaks while your paint is drying, so there is opportunity to go to the bathroom, or stretch your legs if necessary. At the end of the class, you'll have learned techniques from a professional artist, and you will be able to leave with your very own finished painting to hang at home! You will help us free fly our falcons on the cliffs of La Jolla at the Torrey Pines Gliderport, a National Historical Place and beloved landmark. In our Experience, offered through Total Raptor Experience San Diego, you'll learn how to call and release one of our trained birds using a falconry glove, and admire their aerial skills while they soar above the cliffs. You'll get an up-close and personal view of their mastery of flight as they perform simulated hunting behaviors, swooping, ground-skimming and diving at high speed after a moving target. At the same time we will discuss raptor flight styles and how they contribute to the diverse ecologies of different types of hawks and falcons. Lobster Hoop Netting! This is one item found on most fishing or lovers of the marine life's Bucket List. If it's not on your Bucket List it should be, especially with a local! Spiny Lobster season starts at the end of September so there's TONS of "bugs" to be caught. You'll learn fun facts about lobsters & the other marine life we'd catch. Lobsters are nocturnal all hoop netting would be done at night. It's best get the nets wet before or at sunset. Lobsters hide in jetties & rocky areas, we would throw the nets off public docks, piers or jetties. More details on what to bring, etc. listed under "Guest Requirements". Today, you will be submerging yourself into the culture, and flavor of mezcal, you will learn about its origins, the process of making mezcal and the main differences between the agaves used and the processes implemented in many of these "palenques" ( mezcal distillery) by the different maestros mezcaleros. You will be tasting 8 different bottles of small batch artisanal mezcal and comparing tasting notes with myself and the other guests.
