Located on the edge of downtown Providence, the museum showcases an array of ever-changing exhibitions, which encompass a range of areas and periods of world culture, and offers a wide variety of public programming. ”

“Open since 1838, the Athenaeum is a library but so much more. The library is open to the public but you cannot take out any books without a membership. Their children's section is fantastic. There is so much art & history in this building---it really should be on your list of things to see in Providence.”

“One of America's grandest mansions when completed in 1788, the house at 52 Power Street was home first to John Brown, a businessman, patriot, politician, China Trade pioneer and slave trader who participated in the debates and practices that shaped the new nation and the world. However, this is more than an eighteenth century mansion. It was the home of John Brown's daughters and their families; the winter residence of the elegant Gammell family during the second half of the nineteenth century; the formidable mansion of Providence utility, real estate and trolley mogul, Marsden Perry in the early twentieth century. Today this magnificent and elegant building serves as a place in which the public can learn about these men and women who helped to create Rhode Island's capital city. Group, school, and special tours are available by appointment. Please call 401 273-7507 x60 for scheduling. ”

Library
“The Library opened this classic Venetian Renaissance building in March 1900. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Library is a prime example of turn-of-the-century American architecture. Providence Public Library differs from most, in that it is privately governed and supported, but it serves the people in the best “public” sense of the word. The Alfred Brownell collection of ship models is on permanent display in the Ship Room, and the Paul C. Nicholson whaling collection includes a number of both artistic pieces of scrimshaw and several hundred logbooks from whaling vessels.Guided architectural tours of the historic library are offered every other Tuesday.”
