Route
“For serious lovers of graffiti art, a visit to this shop and gallery is a must. Besides stocking a wide variety of paints and art materials, it also serves as a meeting place for Barcelona’s street artists and others who are drawn to the street-art scene. The gallery debuted in 2011, back when there were no exhibition spaces for street art. So the owners decided to use one part of the shop to showcase the work of local street and graffiti artists.”

“Seemingly frozen in the post-dictatorship years of the Spanish transition, this bar has managed to seduce the more progressive drinkers of Barcelona. What’s more, it’s located on the tremendous Joaquin Costa, a pedestrian-friendly street with a high density of freaks per square meter—it turns into an authentic horrorshow when night falls. Bottled and draft beer is the order of the day. Its cuisine consists of mainly bar snacks, including staples such as nachos and guacamole. To drink, try leche de pantera—a milk and gin cocktail—or frozen margaritas. Best of all, despite the bar’s success, the prices are reasonable.”

“This cocktail bar is so classic they don’t even have a menu. Edu and Dani are fantastic hosts, so it’s probably just better to let them advise you anyway. You won’t be disappointed. If there’s room at the bar, sit there; you’re in the perfect vantage point to take in the charming space in all its glory. Maybe it goes without saying, but the negroni here is really, really good. Order one. You won’t regret it.”

Record Shop
“More than just a store, this has become the nerve center of a community of DJs, producers, label managers, and promoters involved in electronic music. Their catalogue of new and secondhand records fills the city’s existential void with acid, dubstep, disco, funk, synth pop, grime, and house. Their crates hold true gems! Owners Gerard and Arnau are aware of their position in the music community—behind their name lies a DJ collective that plays in clubs and festivals all over town and almost weekly. Ask them about their gigs and get some of their T-shirts or tote bags as an atypical gift from Barcelona.”
