“The name of this shopping center is a tribute to Christopher Columbus. The architecture of the space, as well as its original decoration, were adapted to the time of the Portuguese discoveries, one of the most important periods in the history of Portugal. The squares and streets inside the center have names alluding to the 16th century, such as the Avenue of the Discoveries and the Tropic of Cancer Square. It has enough commerce, clothes shops, food stores, stationery, a chapel, a hypermarket, etc. It also has cinemas, sporadic exhibitions, and gardens with several restaurants. It is now the largest shopping center in the Iberian Peninsula with a total of 338 stores and 6.326 parking spaces.”

“Chiado is an elegant and bohemian neighborhood in Lisbon, between Bairro Alto and Baixa Pombalina. It is frequently compared to Paris’ Montmartre district, rebuilt after it was destroyed by a fire in 1998. The most famous streets are Rua do Carmo, which houses the ruins of a church by the same name and Rua Garrett, in the centre of Chiado. The square and its surrounding streets are full of famous cafés, theatres and museums. ”

The royal family moved to another residence in the district of Belem, and the new arcaded buildings became the entry port of the city. Its north side hosts a triumphal arch and one of the city's legendary cafes, Café Martinho da Arcada, a favourite for writers Fernando Pessoa, Almeida Garrett and Eça de Queiroz.
