숙소
Ontonagon is located in an area of Michigan known as the Upper Peninsula or the U.P. This small house stands in a row of nearly identical houses on a short street close to the center of Ontonagon. Norwegian lumbermen built it in April, 1912 (same month that the Titanic sunk) and I have found Norwegian newspapers from Chicago and Minneapolis as well as other Norwegian language documents in the attic joists and even in the walls.

This Airbnb offering is a unique one for the region where just about all listings are empty apartments or houses. The first room at the entrance of the house comprises a wall to wall scholarly library with Iranian carpets and plenty of seating and lighting. From here one enters a kitchen and a dining room. Along one wall of the kitchen and dining room are custom-made floor to ceiling wooden shelves containing cooking utensils as well as equipment for home canning and food preservation. To the right of the kitchen is a small hallway with the entrance to the guest bedroom on the left and the guest bathroom on the right. The hall also contains a washing machine and a pantry cabinet. A staircase leads upstairs.

Across the street is a woods and Rose Island Park along the Ontonagon River is a block away. Lake Superior's waves can occasionally be heard crashing on the shoreline. On this date of writing in June, 2021, I walked across the bridge onto Rose Island and went down the path leading to the harbor entrance. I was checking to see whether it would be suitable or not to release Painted Turtle rescues here. Along the way I saw three families of Canadian Geese with goslings about 5 weeks old. I passed a beaver lodge as well. The town's electricity was cut one evening last December when beavers cut down a tree which came down on an electrical line.

The house is a quiet relaxing place. A recent guest spent the evening reading Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild. The bedroom, located off the back hallway next to the kitchen, has a ceiling fan and a small fan on the bureau. The bedroom has three opening windows. The view from this bedroom includes a bed of ostrich king ferns directly beneathe the window and of a raspberry hedge further back (usually ripe at the end of July). The yard in back is also shaded by two box alder trees. Flower and herb garden in the front yard.

No discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, religion or religious sect, nationality, race, sexuality, political opinion. Having hosted more than 70 different groups, I am well-acquainted with both the requirements by and the accommodations that need to made for travelers based on their religions, diets or lifestyles. For example, Mormon guests abstain from coffee and tea. So it is a great idea to have fruit juice available instead. A Mennonite mother of seven spent three nights here with two of her home school girls. An expectant Catholic couple stayed 2 nights and needed to know about local churches. A librarian from Chicago visited. Peace Corps volunteers have come from West Africa and Central America. Several cross continental bicyclists have made my house a stop (do a web search, for example, of bumon2wheels). A few naturists have even been guests. Surprisingly, and in contrast to the national airbnb trend skewed towards younger guests, the age demographics of guests here goes equally across the gamut. If there is anything that I can do to improve your stay, I will try my utmost to accomplish that.

In writing this, I recall that even in some of the finer hotels a guest can have the feeling of being in a military camp as he is awakened by other guests leaving their rooms beginning at six AM, where breakfast can end at 7:30, and the cleaning staff knocks at the door insistently every twenty minutes beginning at eight AM or even earlier. Sometimes the hotel staff enter the room "accidentally" at an early hour while guests are still in bed or in the bathroom. Nor are there absurdly early check out hours such as ten or eleven AM (violation of which subjects guests to predatory fines and penalties). There is none of that here where guests' dignity, privacy and peace are treated with respect and consideration.

Very rarely have I had more than two guests at a time. There is no difference in the price of a reservation for one or two guests. There is a ten dollar charge for each additional guest above two. I have no shortage of cots and bedding, but the choice of places to set them up is in the front hallway, living room, or the dining room alcove (where a day bed is always set up anyhow). Just realize that there is just one bathroom for guests and it takes a bit more time to set up cots if there are more than two extra persons. So far no request for more than that number and no need to adjust settings on the limit of four guests.

**Rides to trailheads provided at a nominal fee. Guests may leave their vehicles here even if they are not booked. Inquire if transportation is needed from the Houghton Hancock Airport or another regional commercial airport. For those arriving by a private plane the Ontonagon County Airport is very close, so close in fact that its skylight is sometimes visible. The yacht marina is visible across the river.

Ontonagon, 미시간, 미국

I am 15 miles east of the Porcupine State Park, Michigan's largest state park. Ontonagon County is a land of forests, waterfalls and Lake Superior shoreline. A hiking destination during the short summer, it also offers skiing in the longer winter. For backpackers and serious hikers I recommend the set of maps issued by the forestry service for the Ottawa National Forest. These are the only maps I know of in addition ton USGS maps which include hundreds of national forest roads, lakes, rivers and streams in Ontonagon County. They include all roads, including many missing from highway and GPS maps. Do not rely on cellphone service for google maps. There is an eastern, a central, a southern and a western map: four in all. The western one includes the Porcupine State Park. National Forest Road No. 400, for example, is the only way to reach Cascade Falls. You may also notice that highway signs for the waterfalls are sometimes missing or misleading. The forestry service has at least three offices in the area. One is in Bessemer 60 miles away on Hwy. 2. Another is on Hwy. 45 in Watersmeet 48 miles south of Ontonagon. That office is south of the intersection of Hwy. 2 and 45. The closest one to Ontonagon is about three miles south of town (on the left going south) on Hwy. 45. The local Ontonagon campground, costing $25 a night, gets many rave reviews, including on youtube. But there is also a great campground deal for $10 a night in Bergland in the town and almost on Lake Gogebic.

My house is a 20 minute walk to Lake Superior. In case you fish or canoe, I am a half block from the Ontonagon River, which is the Upper Peninsula's largest river. There is a boardwalk leading from nearby Zinc Street through the park to the riverside quay. From there one might walk on Rose Island down to Lake Superior. Of course, one could also continue on Zinc Street through the back streets and get to the lake as well. River Street parallels Rose Island and this is Ontonagon's commercial and entertainment hub, though the supermarket and dollar stores are on Hwy. 38. The Eagle Club and the VFW bar/restaurants are open to visitors as well as the other commercial establishments on nearby River St. Every bar and restaurant offers Wi-fi (as well as the public library and laundromat). I personally prefer the spaciousness and lighting of the VFW and the Eagles Club, the latter which requires a $1 membership. (Stubbs and Shamrock bars are rather dark, though pool is offered at Stubbs and on Thursday nights there is a pool competition. Roxy's is my preferred bar not only because it is well-lit, but because it also offers good hamburgers and fries. It is a little quirk at places such as Roxy's and Syl's restaurants that they do not serve pickles with sandwiches unless the customer asks for them. If you want your onions grilled and your buns grilled, Roxey's will do that but remember to request it). If you go to Syl's, don't go there for its coffee, which is extremely weak and will set you back $1.65 before taxes and tips. There is a newly opened restaurant on River Street called the UP North Cafe (a pun on Upper Peninsula). The closest coffee and sandwich place is Connie's, which is a two block walk down South Steel St. to River Street. It has a take out window and some chairs outside. This place along with the Holiday gas station across the street are the only two public establishments with good coffee. Holiday gas station usually has an online coupon for 69-cent coffee. All places mentioned above are within 20 minutes' walk of my house (which has won the Austin Chronicle award ten years running for best coffee served to Airbnb guests).

Ontonagon is 110 miles west of Marquette, 75 miles north of Eagle River (100 miles from Minocqua ) , and 65 miles east of Ironwood. No fast food restaurants around for 60 miles. Environmentalists should know that no local stores promote recycling in any way. However, I recycle all paper, glass, most plastic, and metal. All garbage is composted.
