This luxurious modernist masterpiece with swimming pool sits in a serenely beautiful setting in the unspoilt area of the Puna Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii.

If you love great design and style, fantastic tropical weather, rugged yet lush landscapes, and serene relaxation, then you will love this place for your next vacation. The unique combination here is a stunning contrast of rugged landscape and sharp minimalist architecture. This is a shared family home with a Main house and Studio.

Set in a lush, yet austere 1955 lava flow off the beaten tourist path. This large modern villa overlooks a pristine state reserve, with an ocean view. Large swimming pool in tropical garden.

All rooms are oversized with 10 foot ceilings, including the incredible 20ft x 20ft covered Lanai. The famous Kehena Black Sand Beach is close, and a ten minute walk away.

The house has been featured in many publications. June 30, 2005, Lava Flow House was on the front page The NEW YORK TIMES. It was also featured in the June issue of CALIFORNIA HOME & DESIGN magazine. Lava Flow House has also appeared in two design and architecture books: ISLAND LIVING, by Linda Leigh Paul and MINIMALIST HOUSES by Simone Schleifer.

THE HOUSE: This modernist villa is an art experience set in a remote lava field in a tropical rainforest. It has ocean views, large oversized rooms, soaring tall ceilings , classic modernist furnishings and moving walls of glass. The sleek simplicity of the architecture, juxtaposed by the jagged lava field will inspire most seeking a design experience . The property is flanked by acres of pristine untouched state land. Stunning views that sweep from the upper ridge of the rift zone down to the glimmering blue ocean. The pool wraps the front of the house, providing a lovely reflecting pond for the architecture and untouched natural environment. The Lava Flow house is the only one of it’s kind in this area.

THIS LISTING: Is for the 2 bedroom 2 bath Main House. (we can accommodate larger parties by request). . The two master bedrooms have private sitting areas and full adjacent baths .There is a tv room, and a more formal living room. The house has an expansive covered 600 square foot outdoor lanai that is fully furnished. Formal dining room that seats 10. The is an owner's office/studio set in the lower garden that is also available upon request.

PRICING: The base price in the listing for the Main House and is quoted 4 guests. For sustainability and cleaning reasons, we request that small parties just occupy the minimum number of beds. For additional guests there is an additional per-guest, per-night charge of $95. Children who are 2 years or older at the time of your stay are considered paying guests. We allow 1 infant per party free of charge. After this, each infant would be charged the $95 per infant/night above the 4 person base guest pricing. By entering the date range and the number of guests, you can see the total price for your proposed stay, including all fees.

DISCOUNTS: The site will automatically incorporate a 10% discount for stays of a week or longer. Pricing varies by season, so your per-night base rate may be higher than the one shown on the listing. Last-minute discounts are sometimes available.

Guests have private use of the main house and upper lanai. The lanai has a stainless steel BBQ for your exclusive use.

The pool is not heated, but at the ambient temperature it is usually quite comfortable, (ranging usually between 76 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit.) We ask that you use plastic cups and pool towels (both are provided). The pool is professionally cleaned and maintained several times a week. The pool is shared with the Studio in the lower garden. The Studio is sometimes occupied by the owner, his family or his personal guests. Should you like the privacy of the entire estate to yourself, this can be arranged at additional cost by booking both accommodations together. Please contact us and this can be arranged.

NO outside (unregistered) guests are permitted on the property unless by prior arrangement. If outside guests are agreed-to, there may be day-use charges, so please check first.

NO NOISE PLEASE. Our local Hawaii county operation permit STVR -19-346808 requires no noise after 9PM. Guests violating this rule will be asked to leave. Rules are posted according to local laws.

Please be aware this is a shared property with a very modern architectural design. Some guests may be shocked at the large expanses of windows and how the Studio and Main House look into each other. If you do not like modern architecture and transparency in design, please do not book this property. If you don't like sharing, then we suggest you book the entire property.

THIS IS NOT A HOTEL - THIS IS MY HOUSE
The airbnb phenomenon has led many travellers to believe that staying in someone's private home should be like a hotel, where they are entitled to do and demand what they want, without considering that they are staying in someone's home in a private neighbourhood . We are a unique private home experience and do not aspire to corporate cultural sameness or service. This is my private home with my private decorations that I like as my own home., and I don't expect this to please everyone. I have opened it up to guests who want to stay in my home for what it offers as shown in my description and photos. It has a very strong, uniquely modern personality in an exotic rainforest that may not suit those seeking a hotel experience. IT IS ADVENTUROUS. Although we have excellent management and maintenance staff, if you're looking for certain "sameness" in a corporate hotel experience, please don't rent this property - you won't appreciate the uniqueness of this place and you'll be disappointed - this place is a tropical modernist adventure, and you need to have that frame of mind to enjoy it.

Rules are posted according to our local laws. The Lava flow House is a special nature retreat in a very quiet neighbourhood where neighbours respect each other's peace and quiet.

STAYING CONNECTED: There is no cell service at the house or immediate surrounding area. We do provide a landline telephone with free long-distance service to the US. We also have DSL wifi.

BUGS AND NATURE: The Lava Flow House is built on the edge of a pristine lava field, a wilderness area that is, like much of the Puna district, completely natural and untouched. There are MANY KINDS OF CREATURES who live side by side with us since it's their home, too: Birds; small mammals like mongeese, mice & rats; toads & frogs; geckos & lizards; Insects like coconut beetles, mosquitoes, flies, roaches, tiny fruit flies, etc.

Guests who come from the Mainland or other countries sometimes are surprised or upset that some of these tiny creatures find their way into our man-made environment. While we do everything reasonable to maintain the separation of "our" territory and "theirs", it's not possible to completely eliminate their presence from the interior of the house.

Geckos, for example, will always be inside any Hawaiian home. Hawaiians feel they are a sign of good luck, and should be respected. Geckos are afraid of you, so they will stay far away. The don’t bite and are gentle creatures.

We mention all of this because, if you or anyone in your party is phobic about insects, bugs, or unwanted natural visitors, please consider carefully before you book our home. Most of our guests don't have negative experience, but we want to be clear for our more sensitive guests. We recommend keeping the screen doors shut at all time, especially at night. This is the best way to ensure a comfortable stay.

TRAVEL TIMES: Some guests have said they were surprised at how big the "Big Island" is. Please anticipate long driving times to see all that our island has to offer. It’s about 2 hours drive from one side of the island, to the other. The closest airport to fly into is Hilo. Kona Airport is on the other side of the island, and is a longer drive to the house.

FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN: We love families, and children are welcome. Please note this is a very special and delicate house, and it might not be suitable for your family. It has unique finishes, expensive furniture, and area rugs. Some of the furniture and area rugs are white. Additional cleaning fees and repairs can get expensive. The screen doors are oversized and delicate. We like to remind our guests to take special care of the screen doors, large mirrors, area rugs, and furniture. There is a deep swimming pool. An adult must be present at all times, while children are outside, in the pool, or on the lanai. Children may not be left unattended anywhere on the property. Adult supervision is always required.

PETS POLICY: We welcome well behaved pets and responsible owners. Pets are allowed with the following conditions:

Each pet accounts as one human occupancy.
Pets need to be accompanied and supervised at all times, inside or outside.
Pets may not be left alone at any time.
Pets must be on a lead at all times when outside. They may not roam freely on property.
Pets that bark or are noisy will be asked to leave immediately.
An additional deposit to $1000 is required.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN:

At the Lava Flow House we employ as many sustainable design principles as possible, including respecting the environment and supporting our local community. We are partially off the grid and reduce our energy and waste footprint as much as possible. This means:

1. No AC. We are not a hermetically sealed environment like a corporate hotel. The house is designed / sited for a natural cross flow catching the abundant coastal trade winds. There are temperature swings, and yes, Hawaii has a Summer and Winter., a dry season and a wet season. We have fans if needed.
2. Water collection: we collect our abundant rainwater from the roofs, filter it 4 times, and store it in tanks below the Studio. It is safer and cleaner than city water and without chemicals.
3. Electricity: we use the latest in LED technologies to reduce our energy usage. Our home is one of the most efficient on the island, according to Hawaii electric.
4. Pool Heating: the pool is designed to be passively heated by the sun. It may be cooler in winter months when the skies are cloudier.
5. Recycling: we use all recycled paper materials
6. Locals. We hire locals from our neighbourhood who know the place and respect it. Ask them for advice on how to contribute to our local small economy. Go visit our local markets and don’t miss our local night market with musicians at Uncle Roberts.

Whenever possible, we greet guests in person for their check-in with a quick tour of the property. We highlight the details and amenities. We make every effort to be available to guests by e-mail, phone, or in person. We have a 24/7 emergency phone number if something comes up. Our property manager lives in the neighborhood. There will always be a qualified person to assist you with any needs that may arise. We strive to accomodate guest requests, and are just a phone call away.
