Overview of Tallinn City Centre, it consists of the historical Old City and the surrounding suburbs with wooden buildings erected in the end of the last and the beginning of the present century. These houses have been steadily reconstructed and new modern stone buildings have been added to the area. The general look of the buildings is quite diverse. Most of the governmental and cultural institutions of Tallinn (and the republic) are located here.
Tallinn’s jewel and main highlight is the Medieval Old Town. Just like thorn out of the history books the compact, cobblestone area between the Town Walls is easily walkable and offers plenty to see and discover. Conveniently, most of the “must see” sights are clustered together, making them easy to fit into a tight schedule.
Offering refreshing contrast to the Medieval, centuries old scenery is the ultra-modern old factory complex Rotermann turned into contemporary architecture show-off, just 2 minutes’ walk away from the apartment.
To escape the central city’s hustle and bustle head to leafy Kadriorg area. Vast park dotted with art museums along with majestic Baroque Kadriorg Palace make this area perfect for pleasant walks or museum visits.
Bus ride or drive further along the coastline leads to Pirita district. Pirita with Tallinn TV Tower offers the highest observation deck in the country. With good weather and a bit of imagination you can see Finland from here!
On the other side of the city, equally surprising is the quieter and much more suburban looking Kalamaja wooden architecture area within easy stroll form the port. Kalamaja’s main attraction is the modern sea centre and maritime museum at the architecturally unique Seaplane hangars.
A short bus ride away at the western edge of Tallinn is the Rocca al Mare area best known as the site of the Estonian Open Air Museum and Tallinn Zoo.
