We meet at Ball & Chain restaurant, eastern end of Salamanca Place, Hobart. Short walk to Lenna, this 1874 - built sandstone mansion. Onward (50m) to Princes Park and a sublime view over the Derwent estuary, Sullivan’s Cove, CBD and Eastern Shore. Significantly the imposing Empress Towers a 13 storey mid-century high-rise heralded the beginning and end to hi-rise buildings in residential Hobart. Crossing the parkland we pass by a plate honouring Matthew Flinders, who was first to circumnavigate Australia and prove Tasmania was an island separated from Australia’s mainland. We visit the restored Signalmens cottage, Harbour Masters grand house and stop for a brew at Cream within the original convict built Ordnance Buildings. On the waterfront we visit CSIRO and Australia’s Antarctic research base. Past the Sydney - Hobart Yacht race Judge’s Box is the AJ White Park which offers a glimpse into Battery Point’s industrial past. The urban subdivisions reveal themselves along our walk: Clarke Ave, Mona St, Colville St, Hampden Rd and Arthur Circus to see multiple examples of workers cottages, grand residential and commercial dwellings. We finish at Pollen Tea Room with refreshments or a light meal - whichever you may prefer (not included) at this local favorite and still relatively well kept secret.. The joy of this walking tour is time efficiency in a quiet residential enclave.
Hi, I’m Greg. For all my 40 yr global working life in tourism and transport, I’ve been travelling the world pursuing my thirst for culture, history, art & architecture, food & wine. Two years ago I found myself resident in this historically rich hamlet of Battery Point, Hobart, Tasmania. A keen reader, walker and curious to a fault, I’ve invested in this new love with historical, academic and literary pursuits, This tiny peninsula chronicles the European settlement of Tasmania, and Australia with it’s accessible visual legacy of indigenous, colonial, Federation and Australian symbols of society, commerce and community since the early 19C through today.
