There are many walking tours of Edinburgh and they all offer a similar stroll around the key historical landmarks. However, would you prefer one which will leave you with a unique and special connection to the city? That is the goal of this literature tour. Edinburgh's contribution to literature is unparalleled; it opened the first circulating library in the UK in 1725. Every year it hosts the world’s largest book festival. It is also the birthplace for some of the greatest writers in the history of English language. It is for these reasons that in 2004; Edinburgh was named the world's first UNESCO City of Literature. The tour lasts just over two hours and it involves visiting locations which have a connection to the literary heritage of the city. There will be 12 stops and at each one, I will give a 5/10 minute explanation of the location's connection to literature. Each stop will be a place that has been a dwelling, or has provided inspiration, for a famous Scottish author or poet. The authors/poets that will be covered are Robert Fergusson, Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, JK Rowling plus 10 others. In summary, hearing how famous authors and poets have been inspired by Edinburgh offers guests the chance to get to know the beautiful city in a way that is unusual, insightful and memorable.
My name is Cathal Dorrian and I have lived in Edinburgh since 1990. I love the city and over the years I have learned how it has made a remarkable contribution to English/Scottish literature. The aim of this tour is to share this learning with you. In addition, on offer is a stroll around one of the most beautiful cities in the world. My hope is that the tour will be an experience that you find original, rewarding and educational. My ability to offer this tour derives from the fact that I have read extensively the work of the authors and poets that feature on it. I have also carried out years of research on their lives in terms of background, upbringing, connection to Edinburgh and how they were critically received.

The meeting place, and first stop on the tour, will be outside Camera Obscura on the Royal Mile, which is just down from the Castle. The route of the tour will take us to the bottom of the Royal Mile, to Canongate, south to George Square and finishes at the Greyfriar's Kirkyard cemetery. The distance is about 2 and a half miles and it will take just over 2 hours. So it may not be suitable for people who would struggle to walk long distances.
