I offer a leisurely 90 minute walking tour starting In the heart of town. Firstly, there is an introduction to the architecture around the Civic cultural precinct, before a moderate climb up to The Hill and the Obelisk. It has a panoramic view of the city, harbour and coastline. I describe the major landmarks and places of interest, providing detailed commentary and sharing stories about their past. We'll then see the cathedral and Newcastle East. This historic beachside area includes relics from the convict days and hidden laneways behind old terraces. Then it's on to the Hunter River foreshore facing north over the working harbour. You will enjoy the view from Fort Scratchley and a level stroll along the waterfront past the Stockton Ferry wharf and the new light rail. The walk showcases the Port of Newcastle, an interesting mix of buildings and recreational precincts. It includes old and new architecture, the scenic landscape, inner city homes, pubs, cafes and streets full of charm and character. I briefly explain some of the planning issues and controls which have helped to preserve the heritage buildings, while allowing renewal and growth. There will be ample opportunity to answer questions and provide local insights, as well as finish with an excellent coffee when we return to Wheeler Place.
I've lived in Newcastle for 15 years and worked as an urban planner on a diverse array of interesting planning issues and projects. I've grown to love the city and gained unique insights into the past, present and it's emerging future. I enjoy exploring the many precincts around town, admiring the rich architectural heritage and the innovative new buildings which have recently gone up. The geography of Newcastle is also beautiful, with spectacular cliffs and surfing beaches along the coast, iconic Nobbys Head at the mouth of the Hunter River and the busy working harbour directly adjacent to the city centre. I regularly walk through the neighbourhoods of Newcastle and detour to "out of the way" places that provide a window into the life of the city.

Places visited include out of the way homes and historic buildings, hidden laneways used by locals plus neighbourhood parks and pathways. These are areas I have discovered around Newcastle during my time here. The obelisk park is special because it overlooks both the natural and built environments of the city. The foreshore walk features the industrial past, working harbour and the emerging future, as Newcastle undergoes major change and growth.
