Learn how to make portraits of strangers, both with their permission (posed) and without (candid). Suitable for tourists and residents alike, this experience is sure to inspire you creatively and deepen your love of the city and humanity as a whole. And if you are visiting, it’s one of the most profound and genuine ways to take in New York City. This experience covers practical aspects of photographing strangers, including how to approach them and gain their trust, the psychology behind getting the portrait you envision, the importance of respecting the public sphere, and how and why to embrace fear, among many other topics. The experience begins with a foundational talk on photographing strangers, followed by a series of short 15-minute assignments that you complete in Washington Square Park. Participants share their experience and troubleshoot with Amy for an optimal and individualized learning experience.
I’m a fine art photographer based in Brooklyn who specializes in street portraits. A huge fan of New York City and its colorful characters, I’ve been photographing people on the street for close to 20 years (both posed and unposed/candid) and have learned a lot of lessons that I would love to pass on to you. My photographs exhibit internationally and have been published in The New York Times, the New York Observer, and most recently in the book Brooklyn Photographs Now, published by Rizzoli. I teach street portraiture at the International Center of Photography and through SEEK Workshops in Oaxaca, Mexico, and regularly give public talks on photographing strangers. BuzzFeed called me “a master of street photography in the busiest of all concrete jungles, New York City.” I'm represented by ClampArt, a well-known gallery located in Chelsea.
