In our rental car with you driving, we'll go to the campus of the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island including the former R. J. Reynolds Dairy barn, now the Institute's lab and offices, and see the unique Turkey Fountain. We'll visit the scenic Sapelo Lighthouse, built in 1810, the visit the unspoiled Nannygoat Beach. Then we'll tour the Hog Hammock National Historic District where a small community of descendants of the former African-American slaves still live. Next, we'll drive through the R.J. Reynolds Wildlife Management area to Cabretta Island and view of the Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge, then on to the historic restored Raccoon Bluff African Baptist Church and ruins of the Rosenwald School and former African American settlement. Then, we'll continue on to the Indian mount at Bourbon field first farmed by early French owners of part of Sapelo, McKenzie's Old Indian field, the Reynolds duck pond, High Point, and the mysterious Indian oyster shell ring. Next stop will be the tabby ruins of the Chocolate Plantation slave cabins and sugar mill, Behavior slave graveyard, and Reynolds airfield and hangar.
I have made a 30 year study of Sapelo Island history where I have been a regular visitor for 50 years for my job as a magazine editor, chief information officer of the Georgia State Game and Fish Commission when most of the Island was purchased from the heirs of R.J. Reynolds, news and editorial writer and columnist for the local Darien News, and regular beach goer and hunter on Sapelo. In addition, my wife worked on Sapelo for 12 years with the University of Georgia Marine Institute.
The Sapelo ferry may only be used by visitors or employees of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the University of Georgia, or of residents or property owners of Sapelo Island. The Sapelo Island National Estuarine Area includes most of the western side of 10 mile long, 6 mile wide Sapelo Island, including thousands of acres of unspoiled saltwater marshlands studied by the University's Marine Institute. You'll be driving the rental car.
