The tour will commence at the Independence Visitor's Center with an introduction to the topic of Black History during the colonial period. You will hear about the role that Black Americans played in the founding of the nation. The group will continue to the President’s House and hear about the 9 enslaved people who were held there. The group will hear about Martha Washington's handmaid who ran away to escape slavery. At the next stop you will see where The Fugitive Slave Act 1793 was passed.

The next stop is Congo Square where people of African descent held celebrations. It is also a potter's field where free and enslaved Africans are still buried to this day. The next stop is Mother Bethel AME Church. There is where the African Methodist Episcopal Church was established and is the oldest piece of real estate owned by people of African descent in the United States.

You will hear about the liberation of a woman whose owner attempted to abduct her back into slavery and the trial of her rescuers.

You will also see the traditional sites of Independence Hall, liberty bell, Congress Hall, and much more

Other things to note
Masks are required.

We will be walking approximately 1.5 miles for the tour on uneven and cobblestoned surfaces. Please wear comfortable and sturdy footwear.

We will continue the tour during light rain.

I was born and raised in Philadelphia and I love my City. I have a formal education in history and historical research. I also went to law school. I'm naturally bubbly, friendly and approachable.

I have a guide that gives tours on The Black Journey. His name is Mijuel. He has a degree in history and political science.

Excellent tour! I am originally from Philly and had been visiting with my fiancee when we decided to book this tour / play tourists. Very impressed with the depth of knowledge presented and would certainly recommend to both locals and tourists.

We took another walking tour on the founding fathers the previous day. It was great to see the same places from a different perspective. There was surprisingly little overlap and we got fantastic new information about the determination and resilience of our ancestors.

Raina was such a great guide. She was very knowledgeable and informative about the history of Philadelphia. She spoke about the sad truths of slavery and how it still impacts how people of color are treated today. The route was easy to walk, and since she used a small head set mic, it made it easy to hear her. If you are ever in the Philly area, I suggest you should check out this Black History tour, you will not be disappointed.

Great way to spend time in such a historic city! I was born and raised here and still enjoyed this tour. The guide was knowledgeable about so much. The walking tour made me miss this city so much—so much to see and hear in such a small walking radius. I would recommend it highly to visitors and residents. Thank you!!
