Meet at the VF Park on Buitekant Street (opposite #26 & #28 Buitekant Street) in Swellendam. This is where the entrance to Masbiekers' Valley Project (MVP) trail is located. We will provide the compost, spades and trees to be planted, as well as refreshments. The MVP trail is about 2km and we will do it at a leisurely pace. Along the way we'll view the outdoor sculptures created for our 2019 Environmental Sculpture Competition with local schools. We'll also take a look at the indigenous and exotic trees and plants, filling you in on the ecosystem rehabilitation taking place here. In addition to telling you more about the indigenous fauna and flora, Andrew will also touch on the historical and cultural value of the Masbiekers Valley area. We also pause to view the other artworks along the trail and talk about land or eco-art. We will stop to plant your indigenous trees in one of the suitable areas being rehabilitated. The holes for your trees will be dug for you so there's no heavy work required! Then at the halfway point, we stop for coffee or tea and rusks overlooking the Masbiekers dam which attracts a variety of birds. After tea/coffee, we will return via an alternative route, pointing out various fauna, flora, artworks and signs of life en route. The tree-planting and guided art walk will finish back at the starting point on Buitekant Street.
We (Andrew Hofmeyr and Landia Davies) are the founders of the Masbiekers Valley Project (MVP) started in Swellendam in 2016. Our community initiative is transforming a neglected public area and has built 6 outdoor sculptures for the finalists of the MVP 2019 Environmental Sculpture Competition open to local schools. Andrew is a practising artist and qualified teacher and Landia has a postgraduate degree in Sustainable Development. We are both passionate about nature and art, so we've set about cleaning the place up, making paths and creating an environmental sculpture trail. We're working with volunteers from the local high schools to rehabilitate the area, make an arboretum and learn about ecology, art and conservation. The area is attracting more birds, insects and walkers as we clear invasive plant species and plant indigenous trees.
Rusks (tea biscuits) made locally.
Locally roasted coffee or tea and spring water.
