Washington's best loved museums line the East side of the National Mall, laid out between the Capitol Building and the Washington Monument. Called the "Nation's Attic," the Smithsonian Institution is one of the largest museum complexes in the world, with 30 million annual visitors, 19 museums, and over 150 million items in the collection. Each unique building is an architectural landmark all it's own. On this tour, explore how the Smithsonian Institution has shaped the fabric of the National Mall since 1855.
Carolyn & Sam
I'm a former architect and life-long lover of all things brick and mortar. I left my drafting desk in 2015 and founded DC Design Tours, a tour company focusing on the architecture and design of Washington DC. I prefer to talk about buildings rather than draw them. I'm a graduate of the University of Maryland Architecture Program and hail from the exotic suburbs of New Jersey, though the District has been my home since 2006. When not guiding, you can find me counting columns at the National Building Museum (there are 152) and traipsing through Rock Creek National Park.

We'll be strolling down the Eastern side of the National Mall, discussing the design and architecture of our Smithsonian Museums. Starting at the Smithsonian Castle, we'll take a look inside, then explore the backyard gardens. Proceeding past the Arts & Industries Building, we'll see the Hirshhorn Museum, modern Air and Space Museum, Museum of the American Indian, and more! Our tour wraps up at the foot of Capitol Hill near Garfield Circle.
