For 3.000 years, Lisbon was shaped by Greeks, Romans, Barbarians, Muslims, Christians and Jews. Resilient city walls and strong minded people made it able to reborn out of many turmoils. The most devastating experience was the earthquake and tsunami of 1755. It destroyed the medieval city centre and the brilliant buildings of the Age of Discoveries. But Lisbon's recreation kept many elements of the old town in the city's new fabric. We'll start a 3 hour walking tour admiring Lisbon's medieval remains and the renewed city plan from the Carmo ruins viewpoint. Then we'll look for hidden details of Roman, Muslim and Jewish presence in Rossio, Mouraria, the Castle, Alfama, the Cathedral and the large port area of Alfândega. We'll look for protective city walls, latin inscriptions and a Roman theatre, surviving medieval buildings, remains of the Jewish district and we'll even make a short trip underground. Each stop is an opportunity for brilliant stories of bravery and kindness and dark stories of persecutions and exclusion - all that make up for a complete city history. We'll finish near Baixa, in the sunny Terreiro do Paço.
I'm a History graduate, an international relations PhD candidate, father of one, friend of many. Born and raised in Lisbon, I traveled a lot only to realise I already lived in a magical town. I know this hilly city as the back of my hand. And I love discovering and sharing its secrets. I speak Portuguese, English and French and I understand Castilian. I'm passionate about art, music, photography and wine. And I enjoy learning also from visitors. Come with me. I promise you won't regret it!
