Nestled between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay is the perfect rocky shore for an evening adventure. Twice a month, over the new and full moon, we get the opportunity to venture into the unknown - the land below the breakers. Join a marine biologist for a night stroll along the rocky shore, meeting creatures old and new. Keep an eye out for shape-shifting octopus, UV-reflective crabs and colour-changing cuttlefish and watch as seemingly innocuous mussels and seaweeds 'light up' under ultraviolet light. We suggest eating before the trip, or bringing dinner along for the stroll. The walking is a little uneven, but a short distance. We'll have some hot chocolate and rusks just in case.
I grew up along the coasts of my home country, South Africa. After completing my master’s in marine biology I went on to establish and support successful marine research programs in SA and Mozambique. As a qualified divemaster, tour guide and skipper, I've spent countless hours engaged in southern Africa’s two oceans. You’ll be in safe and experienced hands - I'm qualified in first aid and have worked in the tourism industry for 10 years. From tours and travel, manatees to manta rays, I thrive when sharing my passion with friends old and new.
Organic rusks, perfect for dipping into your hot choc!
I will bring a UV Torch for some 'alternative' lighting. I'll also have a spare torch or two for those without!
After a quick orientation outside Dalebrook cafe, we'll make our way under the railway tracks to Dalebrook tidal pool and rocky shore. We will spend the time exploring the coastline next to Dalebrook tidal pool nestled between the quaint towns of Kalk Bay and St James/Muizenberg.
