Bring your picnic lunch. Then lace up your hiking boots and learn what it's like to be a modern day homesteader! Here you will find a rugged lush West Virginia landscape and a working 40-acre homestead under restoration. Activities are seasonally determined, such as Spring wild flowers and ramps (wild garlic), Summer blueberries and garden harvest/food preservation, Fall colors and cider press, Winter snowy photography. The house was built in the early 1980s during the American "back-to-the-land" movement by folks yearning for freedom, rural peace and a better world. The unique architecture of the back-to-the-land movement is rarely accessible to the general public. To visit this property is a treat for those who appreciate nature, Americana and quietude. You'll experience a partially off the grid home with wood stove and passive solar heating and a flushless composting toilet. Your tour includes a tour of the 3-story home and projects underway (either on foot or in a side-by-side). Projects may include heritage breed ducks and hogs, terraced hillside gardening, water harvesting, erosion control, pollinator habitat restoration, wood harvesting, and composting.
Picnic supplies We have outdoor and indoor seating, picnic blanket, campfire ring with grate, fire starter and firewood
David and Margaret are your hosts for a behind the scenes tour of a homestead under restoration. We bought a vacant homestead in the wilds of West Virginia and there's never a dull moment in bringing it back to life. Margaret grew up homesteading on her family's dairy goat farm prior to living in Phoenix and Los Angeles. David grew up on a walnut farm with sheep in central California. They met while backpacking the Sierra Nevada mountains. Prior to moving to West Virginia, the couple lived in their teardrop trailer for a year in primitive areas and worked on farms across the US.
About half the time is a tour of the 3-story house, which features all oak construction, a 3-story central chimney, passive solar heating, and basic plumbing. Outside we'll see projects underway, whether it's feeding the ducks, dealing with an erosion problem, harvesting wood, or creating plant based fertilizer for the garden. Enjoy the view with the picnic lunch (bring your own), location of your choice on the property.
