The nets will already have been put up to start catching birds before you arrive. You will see the nets catching birds, and how I carefully take the birds out. You will see birds being ringed and measured, and see the different types and sizes of bird rings. You will hear how bird ringing information is used for science and the conservation of birds. Features of birds that cannot be seen in the field will be pointed out, including the preen gland, brood patch, and moulting feathers. Special features of different species will be easily seen, for instance, eye colours, eye rings, wing shapes, bill shapes, and plumage colours. You will be able to take close-up photos of the birds if you like. You will be able to gently touch the birds, and even release them after ringing if you want to.
Bird ringing has been my passion for the last 30 years. As Ringing Coordinator for South Africa for the last 20 years I gained extensive experience in running ringing training courses, and travelled to ring in all South African provinces. I have been able to conduct much research and write papers about the birds I have caught and by using the national database. Countless demonstrations for the general public has allowed me to show people of all ages the amazing features of birds' adaptations. I love catching birds that already have been ringed previously, as this shows how old birds become.
