프로그램

Guests will be guided on a tour through a protected section of Lowcountry forest on a quest to locate, identify and sample wild edibles. Educator and Naturalist, Brian Wheat, will introduce seasonal wild edibles and teach tips and tricks for recognizing and remembering edibles from mushrooms to rattlesnake weed. There will be opportunities to share stories, learn together, make friends, and connect with the classic beauty of the Lowcountry and wonder of nature.

The foray will begin with an introduction and review of foraging mindset and best practices. Wheat will then lead guests on a meandering walk through one of the many trails at Woodlands Nature Reserve. The Woodlands Nature Reserve is a vast 6,000 acre privately protected nature reserve including 11 lakes, a blackwater swamp, and an abundance of natural beauty and wildlife, situated just outside of Charleston.

Brian, who is a DHEC certified mushroom forager, will help point out identifying characteristics of edible mushrooms and plants, share preparation tips, and share general knowledge of the flora and fauna of the Lowcountry. Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation for nature, great facts to share at parties or in a survival situation, and a lifetime memory.

Brian is involved in a broad spectrum of agriculture-related efforts representing the sustainable agriculture and small farm community, and through those efforts, has committed to being an advocate for a more diverse and robust local food system that is rooted in place.
