This experience is for people who are interested in easy, healthy Japanese cooking prepared in a typical Japanese family home. Whether you are a vegan or not, this workshop will be fun for everyone. We'll get fresh vegetables from local stores, and most of the vegetables and ingredients will be organic. My mom is my co-host and our class is based on macrobiotic food and theories, which have roots in traditional Japanese cuisine. We'll discuss macrobiotics, yin-yang food balance, and the five elements theory. We will focus on making easy, seasonal dishes that you can cook where you live, including rice, three to four side dishes, and miso soup. If you have a particular vegan or vegetarian dish you’d like to cook, such as vegan sushi, roasted brown rice porridge, or something else, please let us know at least one week prior to the date of the workshop and we will try to arrange for that too.

I was born and raised in Osaka, and studied in New Zealand and the United States for a few years. I'm an ex-crew member of Singapore Airlines. It's been over five years since I stopped eating meat, and I've found that what we eat affects our bodies and minds directly. I believe if we listen to our body and eat what the body needs, our small kitchen can be like a pharmacy. My mom became acquainted with macrobiotics more than 20 years ago. She has also been learning about yin-yang and five elements theories to enhance her studies. We started our vegan food classes at home almost 3 years ago.

The workshop will take place in my family home in Ikeda, and we'll eat lunch in our traditional Japanese tatami room. Ikeda is a quiet city with lots of things to do. There is a beautiful park for cherry blossoms, a mountain to hike, places to see autumn leaves, small shrines, and if you are not vegetarian, the Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum is near the station. The popular waterfall in Minoh is about a 15-minute drive from our house.
