We set off from Derrynane House and trek towards an ancient standing stone, visiting wetlands and a bird sanctuary on the way. A gentle climb sees us join the old and ancient Kerry Way/Butter road. Here we get our first glimpses of Derrynane Bay and its inner islands. We enter Derrynane's ancient oak woodlands. The name Derrynane gets its name from the Irish language 'Dhoire Fhionain' meaning Oak Wood of St. Fionain. As we walk we'll listen out for bird song and identify plants and wildflowers. As we traverse the woodlands we will identify butterflies, moths and tree species. Crossing the Cahernageeha River we will see a beautiful waterfall and pool. Soon after we rejoin a small country roadway. For the 1.5 hour journey (route 1) we head downhill towards the beaches at Derrynane. For the 2.5 hour journey (Route 2) we cross this road and rejoin the Kerry Way/Butter Road to the ancient Mass Path trail. Route 1: Derrynane beaches As we head downhill we visit an ancient 7th century stone ringfort and learn about its inhabitants and their way of life. From here we walk towards Derrynane Beach and explore its Seashore and coastal wildlife returning to Derrynane House. Route 2: Mass Path Trail Walking uphill we reach the plateau and are afforded beautiful vistas of outer Derrynane Bay. We join the old mass path and follow this beautiful coastal trail back to Derrynane House.
I am the founder of Wild Derrynane - an independent Wildlife and Biodiversity outdoor education and conservation organisation. I am passionate about Derrynane's environment and wildlife species, spending the last 30 years recording and cataloguing its uniqueness. As an educator I love nothing more than sharing my knowledge. I am pursuing a PhD in Augmented Reality for connection to nature. I founded and published the multi-award winning Wild Ireland magazine and have made three feature length documentaries and short films about Derrynane, Kenmare Bay and the Skellig Coast. I regularly feature on Irish National TV discussing a range of issues including climate change, marine plastic pollution and coastal biodiversity. I have worked with the BBC Natural History Unit, featuring in one of their documentaries about Leatherback Turtles.
