You'll arrive at the Lavaloha Chocolate Farm where you'll be greeted with stunning views that stretch from mountain to ocean. We have a welcoming Visitor Center that offers our single origin chocolate, drinks and light snacks for sale, restroom facilities and an expansive porch for picnics and taking in the views. We are wheelchair friendly with portable ramps available. After introductions, we'll head out onto the farm talking about the importance of biodiversity and the history of agriculture in Hawaii. When we reach our mature cacao orchards, we'll adventure into the trees to hunt for a beautiful ripe cacao pod and learn about cacao's special pollinators and varieties. We'll open and sample ripe cacao fruit straight from the tree and pod. From the orchards we'll head over to the chocolate factory where the cacao is transformed into chocolate- a surprisingly intricate process. We'll walk you through the various stages of chocolate making and end up in our chocolate lounge where we'll enjoy a chocolate tasting complete with “off the menu” chocolate items available only to AirBnB experience guests.

To me, travel is inextricably connected to agriculture. In the same way that some travelers explore new places through local eateries, I have explored through local farms. I've harvested blueberries in Maine, grapes in Austria, and organic vegetables in New Zealand. My introduction to the Big Island was on a permaculture farm. Getting my hands in the volcanic soil has helped me understand my home. Chocolate has been a lifelong passion, starting with solid bunnies and oranges that cracked open when you slammed them against the counter. Since then my palette has become more refined namely due to my interaction with the cacao tree. I have tasted beans from hundreds, if not thousands of pods; carefully selecting varieties known for their preferred flavor profile. Join me in learning how to become a connoisseur yourself!
