First I will show you in a typical "depa-chika" where you can find a variety of foods both domestic and international, including daily foodstuffs, side dishes, bento (boxed lunch) , sweets, beverages, souvenirs and so on. Next we will head to my favorite okonomiyaki shop, where I often entertained my important guests from abroad. Interestingly It has low tables set over hollows in the floor like sunken kotatsu (Japanese foot warmer). We can sit around the table by stretching our legs down and you are given a brief lecture on how to cook. The basic ingredients include cabbage, bean sprouts, pork, egg and so on. Then you start cooking your own to enjoy the dish fresh from the griddle. While you are eating, I will tell you why the dish is healthy, delicious and called the soul food of Hiroshima. After eating, if you like, we could try a cozy tea shop to refresh ourselves with Japanese green tea. There you need to pay for your own order. Alternatively, if you prefer, I will be able to take you to a historic site like Hiroshima Castle close to the city center, Shukkeien (a nearby picturesque Japanese garden) or Mitakidera Temple ( 5 km away from the city center). To visit there you only need to pay for transportation and a small entrance fee. I am also ready to help you with information about sightseeing, shopping, eating out etc. during your stay in Hiroshima.
My name is Harry. I live in Hiroshima and worked as a chemist for Hiroshima University for 38 years. I was also involved in teaching foreign students for over 20 years. After retirement I visited several European countries to give lectures in English on environmental education at high schools and universities. There I also enjoyed interaction with the locals through cultural exchange programs like "Japan Day" in which some Japanese food was introduced. Then I thought up that I should help overseas visitors recognize the good taste of Japanese food. I am sure "okonomiyaki", Japanese savory pancake, which is healthy, delicious and the soul food of Hiroshima, is the best food for tourists to try first in Hiroshima. I have so far cooked and enjoyed the dish quite often. This is why I designed the short cooking class on okonomiyaki here.
A plate of okonomiyaki, Japanese savory pancake, made of cabbage, bean sprouts, pork, egg, noodles and some Japanese…
We'll meet up at the front entrance of Fukuya Hacchobori Department Store facing the stop Hacchobori of a tram line on the main street. Firstly, I want to show you in a typical "depa-chika" meaning the basement of a department store. It has a big food market where you can see the locals' preference for food. Then we head to the okonomiyaki shop. After eating there you could try Japanese tea or visit a nearby historic spot, if you have more time.
