프로그램

Explorers will spend two hours in the James River Park System with me as their naturalist guide. Just as the river changes through the seasons what we see and discuss will change from trip to trip. Richmond sits at the fall line, where the river shifts from whitewater rapids upstream to calm waters used for ports downstream. We'll talk about how the James River shaped the City and the wildlife that still calls the James River home. We'll meet at the Reedy Creek parking lot. Water fountains, a changing station, and camp-like bathroom facilities are located here. After a parking lot safety brief we'll walk east along the Buttermilk trail. Here we'll look at floodplain plants such as spicebush, honeysuckle, Virginia jumpseed, and sycamore trees adapted for life near the James River. We'll detour off the Buttermilk trail to the James River and search along the river for osprey, listen to the rapids, and look for waterline marks from floods. On the walk back, we will practice identifying plants pointed out on the walk in. With wildflower guides, we will work through clues to notice plant features easily overlooked. Time permitting, we'll walk across River Road to Forest Hill Park and observe upland forests that do not tend to grow as close to the James River. Come join a mindful walk outside and take notice of diverse wildlife within walking distance to lunch downtown.

I'm a Professional Wetland Scientist passionate about the outdoors. As an ecologist with a Master's degree in environmental science and over 10 years of experience in Virginia it's my job to understand and explain how ecosystems work. I've "scienced" in remote alpine ridges of the Alaskan Interior as well as the swamps of Georgia, but home for me will always be surrounded by Virginia's rivers and streams. I help people pause and be present in the moment outdoors; to notice small details and put them into larger context. Prior guiding experience includes teaching fly fishing through Trout Unlimited, teaching stream "bug" identification to assess stream health, and teaching plant identification to volunteers and paid researchers in the Great Dismal Swamp.
