Take part in this new autumn and wintertime tour! Enjoy hot drinks, plus an in-depth look at African American history in Old City. Philadelphia sites will serve as touchstones to learn about the city's black past, including the lives of those enslaved by America's founding fathers. But we'll also explore affirming stories of freedom and activism, like that of a successful black merchant who used his wealth to fund abolition; and the thriving community of Philadelphia's Seventh Ward, a historically African American neighborhood. First, I'll greet you with a cup of African rooibos herbal tea. With steaming drinks in hand, we'll stand outside Independence Hall and the President's House, where nine of George Washington's enslaved servants lived. Next, while at the site where Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence, we'll consider the lives of his enslaved workers. Then we'll warm up in indoor sites including special exhibitions and off-the-beaten path historic venues, while we consider a long fight for equality. Yes, it's cold out there--but this city's inspiring black past will keep you feeling warm inside.
I'm a lifelong history enthusiast, with black American history my focus, passion, and heritage. As "Black History Maven," I host a history and culture social media site. And in more than a decade of work in arts administration, I've led countless continual learning programs and compelling African American interest events for libraries, historic sites, and museums. I'm a member of the Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides and a dedicated volunteer for the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. My creative writing, which has appeared in literary magazines, explores the African American past, and I'm a born storyteller! So I'm excited to share what I've learned--the real stories of African Americans before me who once called Philadelphia home.
I'll greet you with herbal decaffeinated rooibos tea. My standby is adding two packets of cane sugar. If you'd like no sugar…
We'll be visiting sites that request small donations for admission. These will be included in your ticket price.
We'll visit the President's House, the Declaration House, and then explore indoors at historic sites like Old City Hall, Carpenter's Hall, and the Second Bank of America.
