Have you ever felt the lure of the forbidden graffiti? Are you inspired by the gorgeous street art murals in Wynwood? Then sign up for our Wynwood Graffiti Experience and try your hand at spray paint! Create your own take-home piece on an individual art paper. In the middle of the mural-filled art district, your class will be set up in a parking lot (also filled with murals) or occasionally a nearby field (also surrounded by murals). When you arrive at the Wynwood Graffiti Experience, we will have an easel and art paper set up for you along with a table-full of spray paint of all colors. Masks and gloves will be on hand for personal protection. Although we rarely have issues with ruining clothes, it is best to come in something comfortable that you won’t mind having a few paint dots on. We start with the very basics: how to hold, angle and handle the spray can and manipulate the pressure and length of the spray to paint dots of different sizes, lines of different widths, and to write letters. Then we move on to some more complex skills, like creating a drop shadow, making backgrounds and patterns, and doing a color gradient. After going through the skills of the lesson, you will create your own artwork using the skills you learned and your own creativity. I will work alongside you the whole time.

I'm Orestes, the founder of Wynwood Art Walk Tours and an aspiring artist. As the son of an artist, visual artistry seems to be in my genes. In high school, I was encouraged by teachers to study art seriously, but I fell in love with music and majored in that. In the end, I found myself working as a web designer, once again relying on my eye for arrangement, colors, etc. Since becoming involved with the Wynwood Art District over a decade ago, my interest in doing art renewed. I have started painting in water colors and after observing artists work with spray paint, I began experimenting. I will teach you most of what I learned. At times, local artist Luis Valle will conduct the lesson. Luis is amazingly down-to-earth and accessible despite a rising career that took him most recently to China. I learned most of what I know from him.

I will set up our lesson in the parking lot of the Lighbtbox at the Goldman Warehouse where I am a tenant, or I might take you to a nearby field by golf cart if the lot is busy with other events. In both locations, we have shade to work under, but spray painting does have to always be used outdoors. The parking lot, the streets, and the walls surrounding the field are all covered in murals, so in either location, inspiration is all around.

Orestes was an excellent teacher. We really enjoyed our class with him. He shared with us a great deal of techniques that we were able to showcase in our canvas right away! Also, he took the time guide us when the creative juices were not flowing.
