Some people take a few moments out of their day to meditate, take a walk or just relax. We're going to take 45 minutes to simply play the music of JS Bach. It's not for a concert, or to impress anyone. It's just a great opportunity to participate in music-making in a beautiful, sonorous stone chapel to ground your day in the sublime. We'll unpack our instruments and get to know each other as we tune and explore the resonant space in Old South Church. We'll provide your music (printed, or download in advance, if you can), chair and music stand. You'll hear a short overview of how we're going to play the music, and then ... The Downbeat! The rest of the time is spent playing music. If we have to pause and regroup, that's okay. We'll get back on track and enjoy the process of coming together for this chance to play music with other folks young and old. If there is time at the end, and if the group wants to, we'll re-play one or two pieces. When it's over, you're in a great part of Boston across the street from the Boston Public Library, near great food and shopping!
I studied orchestral conducting with Leonard Bernstein, Sergiu Celibidache and others. I have taught harmony, counterpoint and composition at conservatory. I have also produced orchestral music performances for composers in Hollywood and around the world for over 10 years. I founded the Boston Symphonic Laboratory for musicians to learn, test, and improve approaches to great music making. It's all about building awareness of what's in the score and what we each are doing in the moment. The Boston Symphonic Laboratory kicked off in 2018 with a marathon session exploring and playing Barber's Adagio for Strings with guests from New England Conservatory and Boston-based orchestra, "A Far Cry."
Music stands, chairs, printed music (and you can also download a PDF of your part in advance, if you want to be ready to…

Download your part so you can have it ready. You should be able to play your instrument and be comfortable sight-reading some fairly easy music. But don't worry if you're rusty (we all are!) ... We're doing this just for fun. Arrive on time or a bit early so we can get started promptly.
